Home grown moderator

I posted a similar post at GTA...

Noisy air gun + lots of spare time + lots of bamboo = Gilligans island time. Made a bamboo moderator out of a couple of canes i cut. I doubt it will meet the standards of a professionally made moderator but it solved my problem of cringing every time I fire off the gun at higher power.

Used two canes, one thick one thin. I cut slots in the thin one, wrapped it with felt and stuffed it into the bigger one. Held onto my TalonP with split bamboo splints, hose clamp and zip ties. Doesn’t get simpler than that!

Ant bait? Do you mean the bamboo will attract ants?

I am a middle school science teacher so my whole life is all about trying to make interesting things out of limited supplies. You know... race cars powered by mousetraps, rockets made out of straws, balances made out of coat hangers. Silencers made out of bamboo was just the next step.

But where to go now? I don’t have any coconut trees, yo! So I am stuck with bamboo. And moss. %#*-ton of bamboo and moss here in Oregon. What can I make out of that? More moderators I guess. Now to try a larger volume - this doesn’t do enough for level 13 on the TalonP.

I should set up a little farm stand. Home grown sustainable silencers. Take one, leave some money kind of thing.

I’m ready to take the airgun moderator market by storm. Airgun world, here I come!

all joking aside, I love tinkering like this and wish I had the equipment and skills to do it right. Pretty fun experimenting for me. I plan to build a few different designs - change the length, diameter, see what works best. Obviously it takes about 10 minutes to make and I have hundreds of bamboo canes in the yard to choose from.

Well I suppose I could make bamboo bongs. Open a stall at the farmers’ market. Homegrown silencers and bongs... good family fun.

sorry if that offended. Not making bongs.

And I am not fooling myself that this is a good suppressor. It works ok to cut moderate noise when the gun is restricted with a moderate top hat valve cap or low power wheel settings. I was chronographing, and in the 12-26 fpe shots it muted things quite well. Pellets moving at 415 - 690 FPS if I recall. At 43 fpe and pellets moving over 800 FPS, it was not really effective at all - as a faint ringing in my ears keeps reminding me

so while I will some day get a real suppressor, in the meanwhile I may make another. I have more felt and bamboo... will try a tube with a greater volume.

Give a volume changing version a try.

The "can" on my Ataman BP17 is just a hollow can. Not very sound deadening.

I bought three spur gears and some small all-thread from a radio control shop (mostly cars). I made a three legged, sliding gear, three chamber silencer. One gear is not movable, the other two gears are, ball point spring loaded against each other. I did make the spring load adjustable, but the first try worked so well, that I'm afraid to mess with it..!

While I don't have any "accurate" way of measuring the sound level, it was VERY noticeable the difference in perceived sound. I tried three other versions of "packed", like a car muffler. Virtually no deadening at all. Then I thought of the moving chamber designed.

Kinda fun messing around like that. Mine cost more than yours, but it was just as much fun doing it.

Most simple minded AIRGUNNERS are cheap and just borrow their wife's hair curller and wrap it with scotch brite and felt maybe oiling the felt and scotch brite dampens the sound even further. That last chamber would benefit by being the largest in volume with the oiled felt and scotch brite wrapped hair curler FYI... Yo!

You must use bamboo grown (and labeled as such) for airgun use only

Or you'll get busted by Alphabet org
