Yesterday, I mounted a Nightforce NX8 4-32x50 F2 SFP with the MIL-CF2 reticle on my recently reacquired Steyr HFT Hunting Challenger.
During initial site in, i was amazed at the clarity at 10 yards so much so that i moved my point of focus out to 55 yards and the definition on the faceplate of my target, even at 16X in the afternoon light, was better than any other scope i have owned to date; and i own too many.
Maybe my eyes were just rested or....just maybe...

Actually it ranges quite nicely.... and very repeatable
red or green illumination is also a nice option
Give me a couple of weeks and i'll show you some pics on the spread of the 6" wheel and show what the finished dope sheet looks like.

NF specs list the parallax at 11 yards but it def. goes to 10 as i've sampled at least 4 NF scopes now. I don't think the compact version i tried of the NX8 ranged as well - seemed almost too compact.

Cons or biggest two draw backs to a NF scope are:
#1 cost
#2 weight

You are correct, esp considering it is my #1 reason to whine about scopes...
Full disclosure, it will be interesting to see what the actual dope chart looks like when completed in the next few weeks.
End game requires the dope make sense and not create "senior" moments... ;)

I hate it when work interferes with my airgun time.

In regards to reference points, in my early days of Hunter field target, back in the 12x max mag days I was able to pull off more than a couple wins with a 4-12 Vortex Crossfire, with their BDC reticle. I had 3 horizontal reference points below the cross hairs!!! It was a game of holding roughly 3/4 or 1/2 or etc, between those VERY sparse marks. But it worked. One of the guys looked through that scope at the end of a match once and his response was shock...something along the lines of "how in the hell?!??"

I was too blindly confident to let the equipment deficiencies trip me up. Lol.

You don’t need to spend much money on a scope to compete, a good Athlon or Hawke will work nicely…. I only have pricey Airgun stuff because I’ve been very frugal for 60 years 😉 AND I’m spending my kids entire inheritance 🤣

i only hunt metal plates with holes in them that fall down when i shoot in the hole
kinda feel sorry for the critters getting only 50% of an ethical hit... ouch.
