Hmmm no squirrels ?

Here in the Ozark mountains, we have had a bumper crop of acorns this year. Last year of course it was a different story. As you probably know, all fruit and mast trees alternate large crops every other year. This was an especially good year.
The tree rats are absent right now because this is the time of year that they give birth. That is why biologist like me closed the hunting season until May.
I am sure above the 32nd parallel, the birthing months may differ.
Be patient my fellow hunters, they will return with reinforcements.

We definitely have a ton here in SE FL. I see 1-2 every morning and afternoon just right behind our house. It seams they like those times. I do leave out peanuts, but it seams they like canned sweet corn too. I shot a few this year, maybe 4-5 but I am not actively after them. If I plan on sitting out the night I try to shoot one in the afternoon to use it as bait for the raccoons.

We had some decent weather here in southern PA yesterday as it was 50-60 degrees. I managed to find time around noon to sneak out to the woods near the feeder. Yup, the squirrels are around! Those things are smart though! I spooked one going in but managed to setup up quietly about 25 meters away behind some pine bushes. Three more came in soon afterwards and they were chowing on the corn. These things are going to cost me money if they keep eating peanuts and corn at this rate...

I expect this is their mating season there, so that might change their schedule. It's also a good time to sleep in and try them early-mid afternoon, especially if it's cold.
You are correct it is their mating season. In the years past mornings were always good, but maybe they or patterning me. Maryland season ended at the end of February so I’ll have to wait until September when the season reopens.
