High Power .177

Have been looking at high power .177 guns lately.

Something capable of pushing the 15,5gr NSA slugs at 900+ fps.

So far I have these on my list:

  • Daystate Red Wolf HP
  • Daystate Wolverine R HP
  • Brocock Commander HP
  • Brocock Bantam Sniper HP
  • JSAR Raptor
  • Edgun Matador with huma power reg

Did I miss any? What would you choose and why for a powerful micro-hammer?

I chose the EDgun because I am really into EDguns. Just being honest about that part.

I can tell you this platform is compact, shoulders well, benches well, shoots the NSA slugs at 920 for 47 shots per fill and is incredibly accurate. No additional sound moderation is needed. Forward cocking multishot is a plus for a bullpup IMO. The design and construction is extremely robust. The stretched barrel integrated to the stripper vent chamber makes for a very stable and strong barrel. Like all EDguns, it is easy to work on and clean. What is not to like?

This is my go to gun in a stable of .25s. I have been using it almost exclusively. The slugs with a BC approaching .07 are quite capable. Don’t forget that even though it is a .177, it is a 29-30 FtLb rifle. Pair that with the performance of the NSA slugs and you have your Micro-Hammer😉

If I had to pick bullpup I'd go edgun. My .22 R5M long loved slugs and looking at Joe's looks like his .177 does too. I prefer a rifle feel though so I'd likely go with the Raptor. I've been tossing that idea around but also have no need for one so I haven't. But would be cool! Could also turn down to 12fpe and plink with it when wanted also.

A high power .177 slug rifle is going to be my next purchase/build. I am waiting to see how these JSAR Raptors do in the hands of the first round of customers, but I haven't seen any posts yet.

I am also contemplating getting an LW Poly barrel in .177 fitted to my MKII Impact.

I hear nothing but great things about all of the Edguns, but I'm not a huge fan of their looks and would prefer something with a CF cylinder.

Does anyone know if they are going to make the Red Wolf Safari in .177?

Any other insight from those that have ventured into this territory would be much appreciated.

You forgot the Beaumont Grizzly. Didn't you own one before? Wasn't it 70+ Joule? 1050FPS with 21gr Bullets?

Yes I had one of those. Sold it to fund the Steyr Pro-X pup. That gun broke down so I got the Edgun to replace it. Really like the .177 Matador but I do miss the Grizzly.

I guess what I want to know is why you are not including the Grizzly or why not get another if you thought so highly of it? I had asked the same question in the forum and your reply was “This” (Grizzly picture)

The Grizzly was more of a bench gun. With the lack of internal regulator and very high air consumption it had to be shot tethered to an external tank and reg. Got tired of lugging around on heavy equipment and that was the main reason I got rid of it. When the Steyr did not work out I started looking for a .177 with both power and decent shot count and in search of that ended up with the Edgun.

I am getting 138 shots with my Daystate Red Wolf .177 HP on High Power with the JSB Beast 16.20 gr on one fill

921 FPS - 30.52 FPE - 41.38 Joules

Although I find most Diablo style pellets do best for me in the 850-890 fps range, I do see the longer / cylindrical mid section ones liking more speed. I shoot the Beasts at 950-970 with good results. The BC of the 15.5 grain NSA slug is a game changer though for flat shooting with .177. I calculate .071 from my current setup👍🏻 I have settled on 920 fps with the 15.5 NSA slugs as a great, versatile pesting setup.
