HI POWER SCOPES

What I saw at the 2019 Nationals, if you weren’t sporting a Sightron or a Hawke in Open or WFTF you were just shooting for fun. Hector Medina, one of the most respected FT shooters out there, offers a Sightron set up. He also has a website with a blog on FT.

I shoot HFT ‘cause I don’t/can’t spend that kinda $$$$.

In the 2019 World Field Target competition the most popular scopes were;

PCP; Sightron, Nikko Stirling, March, Leupold, Delta, S & B.

Piston; Sightron, Nikko, Leupold, March, Bushnell, Hawke.

All are pricey and I have been looking for awhile and have not figured out what to buy. I have been using my old Leupold Silhouette scopes which are okay but certainly not the best for FT. Read everything you can on scopes and you will be more confused than before. Good luck.

The Sightron is most popular because of the quality for the price. The SIII is ok optically, but the SVED is much nicer and costs about twice as much. I have owned both and several SIIIs. I like the SIII for the price, but they are not my favorite.

In your price range, I think the best are the Vortex Golden Eagle, Delta 5-50, and the Sightron. As mentioned, they SIIIs have been on sale for $600 recently, but you can expect to pay $700-800 usually if you don’t want illumination. They are. I’ve but not great. The Vortex GE is much better optically and I think a much better scope. If they had more reticle choices, I would definitely still have one. They are $1100-1200 used to new. The Delta 5-50 is very similar optical to the Vortex and the reticle layout was what I was looking for, but the reticle was way to thin for me. It will be more expensive still and be probably $1300-1500.

I think it comes down to price and reticle.

Best one for the best price is the Sightron S3. You have a choice of multiple reticles. You can turn it up to 50X and it’s still clear. You don’t need a spotting scope with this.

Does Sightron offer any Christmas tree style reticle? Horus variant, Tremor 3 type?

I just want to say something about FT. The guys want scopes that double as rangefinders in their focusing abilities. It all relies on the trueing of your eyes to the scope and your dope tape on side wheel.
I personally think I would be better if I used a fixed 10x with great glass. As an Archer & airgunner I don’t find gauging distance out to 50-60 yards that hard. Yes, up hill, down hill, linear sight line and angles are of concern.

I just don’t think it’s hard until you get out past 200 yards. Granted I am not gonna make a hit on a 3/8” hole when not knowing my exact distance past my near/far/zenith zero kill zone. But it’s a fun thing for me alone, not a competition so whatever I think doesn’t matter.
I’m also very use to my range. Going somewhere else might turn my estimate to sludge & open my eyes to a different view.

Go on Sightron's website. They show you all available reticles. Hector Medina, a FT shooter of note, had Sightron create a special S3 for FT that focuses between 10 and 55 yards and has reticle that's totally illuminated. The Reticle is called an MOA-H. Lotsa people use them.
