HFT Scope Suggestions

I’m looking for a nice and clear HFT scope for under $300 +/- $50 or so.

I like the Riton X1 Conquer 6-24, but I’m skeptical about glass quality and the reticle is too crowded for my taste. I am also interested in the SWFA SS 16x, though it has a funky AO location and I’ve seen mixed reviews on the glass quality and eye box. How would the 12x SS compare? Another good scope I’ve found is from meopta, the Optica5, which supposedly has top-notch glass, but it has a terrible reticle with a center 3 MOA target dot. They also have a duplex reticle, but I’ve heard that duplex reticles don’t really work for HFT.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Antoni

Responders here well recommend a lot of scopes. Generally, they are good ones, but will they be competitive for HFT? Check the match reports on the FT forum and see what shooters are using there. For HFT, the prime quality is ranging and this is where many scopes fail. If you can't accurately range your target, then the scope is useless. Glass qulaity is not the prime element here, ranging and reticle are. Can you get a good one for $300? Doubtful, IMO. I use a Hawke Sidewinder 6-24 with a 20X 1/2 mildot reticle. A few bucks more than $300, but worth it. Prices go up from there.

I shoot HFT and have used several scopes over the years. I enjoying trying different ones out to see how well they range (narrow FOV).

Some that I've tried in your budget, look for a used Hawke Sidewinder 6.5-20. New they are out of your budget but used you should be able to find one. They do a good job of ranging with the right parallax wheel. Also the Athlon Argos can be picked up used in your budget as well.

For an affordable parallax wheel, consider one from www.jdscustomdesign.com . Joe has made me several wheels for my scopes and I've be very pleased with the quality and performance.

You will want a scope that goes beyond the 16x maximum allowed by HFT rules. One that only goes to 16x will have a tendency to not have the clarity and a narrow FOV because it's being used at it's maximum magnification. Think of it like adjusting your elevation or windage turrets all the way to one end.

Just my experience. I'm sure others with more experience will chime in.

Good luck and have fun!

I used an Aztec Emerald 5.5-25x50 SFP for a year in HFT (US), and found it to be a very good scope with a great reticle design. It’s received some bad press (mainly due to problems related to clicking) but this is irrelevant in HFT. I sold mine because the reticle was just too fIne for my 72yo eyes under low light dark lane conditions. These show up in the classifieds from time to time and should fit your $ requirements. Another option would be a good used Athlon Helos 6-24x50 ffp. Good glass and the reticle @ 16x is easier on my aged eyes. Uj
