o'ring on check valve was shot so i replaced it and no help. pulled the second stag off and everything looks like new. i can not find anything leaking and it sounds normal but will not go above 1500. Help lease.

Most often it is a minor leak somewhere. Often the o-rings in the foster fittings. If it is fairly new it might be that the burst disk fitting or the red safety valve is loose. If it's been around for awhile it may be one of the several Dowty seals around the stainless fittings. With all the noise these compressors make it is sometimes hard to find a leak. Run the thing up to 1500psi then shut it down without purging and maybe you can find the leak easier.

Could be a leak somewhere along the hose connections. Soapy water time and righty tighty make an all tight time. Maybe even Teflon tape the threads time too.

It is leaking out of the gauge. It blew the little rubber plug out of it. Is it just a bad gauge or is there a reason why it did this?

Yep, all three of mine did that after a few months? I just put a nicer gauge on and no issues for over 2 years, the Oem ones are pure crap!

manometer is wore out ,replacement time,,the rubber plug is there for liquid filled gauges,, for this application(piston type air compressors) a liquid filled gauge is recommended to dampen the pressure pulses that these compressors create. the fact that the plug blew out is your proof, internal leak,,this one is M10 threads pyramid air also has a 1/8 bspp, https://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/Air_Venturi_Air_Pressure_Gauge_6_000_psi/5862

Do have have to take take that all off the top of that so you can remove the old one and tighten the new one down ?

The only part that would need to come off is the air output line coming out of the right side of the second stage cylinder. Loosen two nuts, remove and reattach the air line. Very easy to do. It appears that he used a 1/8 male to 1/4 male adapter fitting to a 1/8 female to 1/8 female connector and a 1/8 NPT bottom thread pressure gauge. That gauge block and gauge are typically is a 10M*1 female thread. If you use teflon tape, a 1/8NPT adapter will seal but it's not a precise fit. M10*1 is a parallel thread and 1/8NPT is a tapered thread.
For anyone else considering this upgrade, you can eliminate the two pieces in Jayson's photo and get a precise connection using a M10*1 male to 1/4 NPT female adapter. You'd seal the adapter to the block using the delrin washer. This mod is an excellent upgrade and the higher quality gauge will provide a more accurate pressure reading. A center back thread gauge facing upward would be another option using this adapter. Here is an example of the adapter but you can find them at several hydraulic parts suppliers online.
