Help with taipan vet

Looking for some input from the experts. Just received a new veteran compact, .25 cal. Came shooting around 880 or so with the 25gr kings. I noticed it was a little loud but chalked it up to the shorter shroud/barrel. Reduced the hst a bit to get to around 860, but still loud and very few shots per fill. Went up and down trying different hst positions, but same problem. Seems consistent through the shot string, but only getting around 14 shots. Seems to fall off the reg around 145, which I think is correct. I checked the breech seal, and it seems fine to my eye, but I may replace it anyway. Any other places I should be checking? If the loudness doesn't change, so be it, but I know it should be getting more than 14 shots per fill. Thanks in advance.

I have a .25 cal Vet Long with DonnyFL Sumo and I am shocked at how quiet it is. I guess the shorter shroud could be a factor in the report. Curious as I considered adding a compact Vet in .25 cal.

Agreed. I also have a .25 vet standard with a huggett and it is very quiet. Was figuring it would be similar, maybe a hair louder.

The taipan compact only has a 13.7 inch barrel. I would turn down the hammer spring until it is 800fps and be happy with it there.


The short barrel and high power is killing your shot count.

Do you fill to 250bar?My. 25 compact is also loud at 850 fps but shootcount is around 30 at that power level with hades. 25.

Filling to around 240 bar. Stopping around 145 bar. I'm ok with turning it way down I guess, but a couple of places online have it rated for around 30 shots at 870 or so. Your mileage may vary I guess, but I still think its not quite right.

Doesn't sound right, and It is behaving like a blown breech seal. Put a piece if tissue over it and see what happens. Sometimes the ring can be damaged in a location hard to see.

I agree with elh0102.You should get twice the shoots you are getting now.Do check the breech seal but i doubth that if it is damaged you would get such consistent shoot curve.

My .25 shorty came to me shooting 25 grain JSBs at 870fps.

Getting 3 mags from 240 down to 120 BAR.

.25 shorty is quite a bit louder than my .22 shorty.

I keep a Donny on my .25 at all times.

43 FPE coming out of this little gun is not going to be silent

Believe it or not, I have gotten very consistent velocity with a breech seal partially blown. It's probably unusual, but it happens.

I bellive you elh0102 i have seen many strange things with pcp's.

kevin10 if the rifle is new you can take it to the dealer to check it out under warranty.

I can't tell you about the noise because I haven't had a taipan. But I can tell you that noise + low shot count = wasted air. I think you have a bad tuning of your weapon you should try to find a good adjustment between the regulator and your hammer spring

Matt’s experience is the same as mine. Know that it takes a larger amount of air to get the pellet up to 880 in a short barrel. Thus the reason the standard or the long will get more shots at the same speed and all that air has a shorter dwell time in the barrel making it louder. 
IMHO, the gun is as efficient from the factory as you will probably be able to get. If give to Paul you will take from Peter so to speak.

as for the loudness, I installed a Neil Clague shroud on mine. Not even .22 loud. (Yeah, I had one of those too.)

Thanks for all the input. I also feel like there is wasted air. My gut tells me the reg is set too high, but I am going to start with the breech seal. Matt, its interesting that you are shooting down to 120 bar, again it seems like I'm at too high a set point. The noise isn't really the issue, getting 14 shots per fill is the issue (even for the compact). I really only mentioned the noise because I thought it would point towards something else.

Somethings wrong... you should be getting about 25-30 shots at 880 fps from 250 bar fill. Time to troubleshoot!

My shorty 25 was tuned by Georgia air for 820 with .25 kings 250 to 180 bar get about 30 never chronied after that just refill after 3 mags super quiet though with factory shroud

Can anyone confirm that part #97 is an o ring? It sits between the barrel and the receiver. Or possibly before the threads on the barrel.

Mine doesn't have anything there.

Just answered my own question. I have a .25 standard and there is supposed to be an o ring there. Going to swap and see what happens.

Part 97 is an oring behind the threads of the barrel. I doubt it is causing the gun to be significantly louder.
