I'll second that ... just put the dowel rod just above the grove and push in with your finger after throwing some silicon grease on it. Once it is in there and not folded over you can do a little last minute positioning with a tooth pick or dental pick. It used to be an exercise in frustration trying to get the darn thing positioned correctly without folding over on itself ... now it takes less than 2 minutes and it's done.

Not to worry ... this will work. You didn't say what caliber you have but the 3/16th inch dowel rod will work for the .22 and you might get by with the 1/4 inch with the .25

I wouldn't even attempt it anymore without a dowel rod ... make sure it is at least a foot longer than the barrel and moderator of your longest gun so you can use the same dowel on all of your guns.. They also work great if you want to push a pellet through your barrel to check out the engraving of the pellet by your barrel ... or if you have a pellet stuck inside the gun ... like if you accidentally double loaded the barrel.

I purchased some brass rod from McMaster-Carr which is slightly smaller than bore diameter. Insert the rod to a position just behind the barrel O-ring groove. Insert the new Oring into the barrel and gently work it into place with the aid of a plastic dental pick.
At first it appears to be an insurmountable task but once you learn how to do it one can be replaced in minutes.
