Help Me Choose the Right Scope

I had a Vortex Crossfire II 4-14 BDC with the adjustable objective on my Srod .177. It performed well, nice and clear but the adjustable objective was very cumbersome. The turret adjustments are really mushy but that is not much of a problem because once zeroed, I just use the holdover marks on the reticle.

The AO continued to be a problem so I recently purchased an Athlon Talos 4-14 BTR with an illuminated reticle. This is a really nice scope.....nice and clear with a side focus that works well for ranging. The turrets are great with both tactile and audible clicks. The adjustments are in tenths of a mil which is courser than I'd like but the real deal killer is the reticle. If you look up "busy reticle" in Webster's, they show a picture of the Talos APLR2 reticle. It's illuminated and that's a plus but there are just waaaaay too many hash Mark's and half Mark's for me to deal with. So the scope is going back and I'll need another scope to replace it with.

Optics Planet has a Sightron STAC on sale for $399. It's a 4-20 with side focus down to 9yds and a 30mm tube. I have three Sightron SIII's all with their MOA-2 reticle that I really like for long range precision shooting with powder burners but I doubt that that reticle will work in low light situations.

So what scopes have these features:

Variable, 4-14 or thereabouts.

Side focus down to 10 yds

Target turrets that aren't mushy.

MOA ranging that is illuminated.

BDC reticle would be acceptable in lieu of an MOA reticle.

30mm tube would be nice.

Gotta be under $400.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for all the replies. On balance, I've decided to keep the Athlon Talos. The only downside to the Talos is the cluttered reticle but I think I can learn to live with that.

During my search I did find my pretty much perfect scope though. A little more power than I needed but it was a Sightron with an illuminated MOA2 reticle. Focuses down to 10 yes, too. Great scope! Only problem is the price tag.....$1399.00! Yikes!

Take the time to learn about what an all .2 reticle offers, in other words there is more info in this reticle to use to your advantage.

.2 mil in the reticle is two clicks worth so it becomes easy to see 1 clicks worth by bracketing between the lines for an odd numbered hold like .1 or .3, or .5, etc. With a .5 mil reticle one has to guess where a small hold is in the reticle because that is 5 clicks worth one has to estimate between.

All that is involved is acclimating yourself to the idea. It's really no different than what guys needed to do when an original Mildot reticle was turned into .5 mil reticles causing people to get used to .5's instead.

Having won long range matches using the .2 mil H59 reticle when everyone else was dialing I know full well how exacting these reticles can be!!!
