as a first break barrel i would suggest an HW 50 in .177 or .22 if you would rather . This is a middle of the road Springer , not hard to cock , a good target or hunting rifle ,, not heavy to carry around .

Both. I have a squirrel problem (they eat all my fruit and veggies). But, I also like target practice.

I am in California. As far as I know, there aren't any restrictions on using springer airguns. They sell them at Big 5 and Sportsman Warehouse so I figured it's fine. I've never shot a springer. I just like the idea of using a simple rifle.

I'm partial to larger pellets, .22 easier to load and hit harder though shot placement it key to humane hunting with air rifles particularly. Lots of ammo selection too. I believe .22 springers are less ammo fussy than a .177

I have a Benjamin Trail in .22 that shoots very nicely. I shoot whatever pellets I pick up at Walmart and it seems to like them all. You’ll need a decent scope and springers can be a bit rough on scopes so shop around for a good one. Coastal Drifter is right, shot placement is key, you don’t want the animal to run off and die slowly. Put at least 100 practice shots through the gun and get a feel for how it shoots and where it hits and different distances. Shoot regularly to stay in practice. Learn basic maintenance practices and take care of it. You probably already know most of this. Welcome, this sport can be a lot of fun and has a lot of practical application.
