Headshots vs Heartshots - Let's look at the evidence!

You have no idea how ridiculous some of the comments are...I sometimes wonder whether some people have the ability to locigally process thoughts. I had somebody tell me once that I am going to be responsible for the apocalypse because without pigeons there will be "no more pollination". Another person told me that it's my fault that "pigeons are becoming extinct", conveniently forgetting that they are one of the most abundant and widespread birds on earth!

Ha ha, wow! I had no idea pigeons were so rare and pollinated everything! Aren't you glad these intelligent people are there to enlighten you?

"Matt_Dubber"There seems to be a lot of debate regarding shot placement, especially in the UK where the airguns are restricted to 12 ft/lbs. Some will tell you that you should only be taking headshots, while others will tell you that heartshots are just as effective.

I put my high powered airguns aside for a day and set out with a 12 ft/lb Air Arms S410 TDR to "gather some evidence". I'll let you decide which shots were most effective!

I struggled with calculations and figuring out how to read Mil-Dots. Your videos taught me how to read it correctly, I use the knowledge you share every time I hunt. Thanks Brad, it's great to hear that the videos have helped! A few years ago, before I'd ever picked up PCP airgun I started watching Ted's videos - I learned everything from scratch thanks to a handful of guys on YouTube taking the effort to share their knowledge. Now it's my turn to do the same Comments like yours keep me going so I appreciate it!

This opens up a whole new topic! The technological society we've built, while wonderful in many ways, allows WAY too much specialization. These people with the hare-brained ideas about birds pollinating flowers are actually so disconnected from the process that they have NO IDEA where their food really comes from. My granddad raised, and slaughtered his own meat. He fished and hunted for game to supplement the table, and there was always a garden. On top of this, he farmed, was a master carpenter, he could weld and braze, repair hydraulics, the combine, the tractor, the pickup truck...you get the idea. My grandad believed that a man should be able to tackle whatever job came along. I've tried my entire life to measure up to his example.

And now we have an ever expanding number of people SO ignorant, that they believe that BIRDS pollinate? What's worse, they have enormous amounts of time to create mischief for the rest of us.

Totally agree with you. I often wonder what would happen if all electronic devices, machines etc stopped working. Can you imagine the chaos? We would probably be fairly OK here in Africa where people just go out and hunt for their own food all the time, but I can imagine some places would be screwed.

I've been for quite sometimes now a big proponent of the neck shot on bigger ground birds like Roosters, feral chickens,.....However, lately I've been taking bodyshots with my .22 set at 35 FPE and it's extremely efficient, extremely,
they run for about 15-20 yards and just pile up.

Body shots on smaller birds like Collared Doves, Pigeons or Minha birds drop them right on the spot

Is it just me or does it seem to other's, that the head shot on most birds, has the propensity to result in a pretty good show of acrobatics? Man, I've counted as many as 13 back flips with some smaller species and a pigeon or two that put on my own private aerobatic display. Sadly, this is misinterpreted by those, not in the game, as suffering or a poor shot. For me, it is a visual reward for a dead on smack down. Keep um coming Matt.

There are times I intentionally do take either head our heart depending on the location of the animal. Based on the afore mentioned acrobatics or dropping in their tracks. Head shots in high places are great to recover the animal. If you do a heart shot on the bird, you risk not being able to recover them. The video has some nice examples of that.
