Does anyone know where I can take my son hunting and have some decent success and privacy in these areas? I am heading out there in June for fishing and airgun hunting.

Very LEAN year for rain on the East slope this year ..... Critters out in the daylight hours appear pretty minimal as well.
Just back from 2 weeks in the back country roaming around BODI to Death Valley and its back country canyons even going out into nevada off 338 back to Topaz. Near springs and water on & off in this time.
While I saw ground squirrels here and there in small numbers, few rabbits.

Here in the high desert of California I haven't seen a jack rabbit unless at night for a while. The coyotes are very small and thin. The ground squirrels are everywhere, but only in towns. Out in the desert they are ghosts.

Well I would think this solves it. Wow. This completely explains it. My friends and I have been talking for months how there just isn't any rabbits around of any species. Crazy.

Sadly, it seems that little is known whether how and if this will affect the entire circle of life in the West. It may even spread east.
I'm in SoCal and as a result of this, since all of my hunting has been on the desert slopes, I haven't even bothered with w/ buying a hunting license, or hunting at all, these past 2 seasons.

I've read the DFG article. I don't see any signs of the disease as of yet on the Central Coast. Bobcats have been active on my place and rabbits are wary now.

Good to hear. Somewhere there is a map showing the spread in the US. There is also a record of all the counties that have been victimized.

Hunting is great up in Bishop area, I actually just got back. You just got to get out and do the footwork and find the signs, nobody is going to draw you a map. Find BLM land, area has plenty of it along the 395.
