Hare - body shot

Hi,

Would you do a body shot on a hare with .22 slugs and 40FPE? If so, what is the best area to place such a shot? Do you have any experience with that? I mean how long can a hare run with a good body shot?

Hares are pretty fragile, I got good size jack rabbits/hares in the vitals with .22 hades @890 FPS and dropped them within 10 feet, some DRT and couple ran in circle for about 15 feet. The 23 grain .22 slugs dropped them even faster.

Sorry no hares round here. But our rabbits I have taken body shots on and most don't go far at all... taken with both .177 and .25. Most I had one run even with the .177 is like 20 yards. Just make sure to aim for back edge of front shoulder and half way between back and chest.

I definitely would not hesitate with that setup. I'd take a body shot on a hare with 18 ft lbs myself.

Hare are not hard to kill.

I have killed hundreds of hares with a 14fpe Prod and cheap-o Crosman Premier Hollow points from Walmart. Those are 6.99 for 500. You don't need all half of what you are asking about ton kill jackrabbits and other hares. I find slower kills better than super fast. The airgun kills rabbits faster and deader than the .22lr. Super fast bullets zip through the body and don't transfer as much energy into the target.

It is up to you if you want to throw slugs at your target. I would not spend the money when cheaper work better (for me).

I always shoot for the head or the heart/lungs. Any hit above the diaphragm will be much more humane than a gut shot below the diaphragm.
