Had a five gun shoot out at 46 yds today.

I got a new custom Cricket Mini in .25 cal tuned to shoot the 33.95 gr MK2's at 910 fps

She was shooting like a top this morning in low to zero wind.

Then later today the wind picked up a little and things went south? Now in it's defense, my back yard is notorious for some crazy stuff when there's the least amount of wind. It's like some crazy vortex back there when the wind comes in?

So , I decided to do six (5 shot) groups at 46 yards since that's where I have my bullet trap set from the back porch. Only averaged 0.70 inches for the six groups with 0.59" being the best and 0.83 being the worst. I was disappointed to say the least?

Then I grabbed my FX500 and gave her a whirl. She fared a little better with a 0.615" group avg for the six groups.

So, I says ok and grabbed the Boss lets see how she handles this. Got a nice 0.375" group avg with the highest group being 0.50 inches and lowest at a stunning 0.22 inches. The two FX's put the Cricket mini in 3rd place???? Holy crap?

I got to thinking and I know my .22 Cricket pup is a shooter, so I grabbed it and went to work. Jeesh, it came in second right behind the Boss with a 0.492 inch avg for five groups. I let it get below the regulated pressure on one group, but even if I counted that group it would be a 0.542 avg.

Then I grabbed my little 28 fpe Vulcan and did the six groups with it as well.

She averaged 0.752 inches for the six groups and came in last place, but I know it's sometimes a little harder for the lower power guns to buck the wind like the higher powered ones.

So, lets recap Winner and 1st place at 46 yards in wind. FX Boss shooting 44.75 gr at 77fpe avg 0.375 inches for six (5 shot) groups.

2nd place .22 cal Cricket pup shooting 18.1 gr at 38 fpe avg 0.492" for 5 groups and 0.542" for six groups if I include the one with low air.

Edited in the Cricket pup power at 38 fpe with the 18 grain. It does shoot the 25 grain at around 865 fps for 42 fpe, but the 18's are flying at 970 fps.

3rd place FX 500 shooting 25.39 gr at 45 fpe avg 0.615 inches for six (5 shot) groups.

4th place Cricket mini shooting 33.95 MK2's at 62 fpe avg 0.703 inches for six (5 shot) groups.

5th place .22 Vulcan shooting 18.1 gr at 28 fpe , avg 0.752 inches for six (5 shot) groups.

Back to the drawing board or wait for a calmer day? Time like this I wish I had a least a 40 or 50 yd indoor range.

I gotta post the good with the bad!

Fuss, cricket pup at 42 fpe with 18's?

Regardless, awesome session with some fine rifles and great shooting!

Oh man, thanks for bringing that to my attention I get 42 fpe with the 25 gr. Make that 38 fpe with the 18 grain. Their running about 970 to 975 fps with the 18's. It's got the power plenum installed.

Yeah, spitting the 18s at what a 1020 fps and getting that accuracy is pretty incredible!

I sat here and got to thinking…….

I probably shot close to 50 slugs today and maybe 100 pellets. I don't know how fast they foul a barrel (the slugs)? So, I whipped out the Ballistol and some patches and went to work. First three patches I dampened with Ballistol . Pulled it through with the PatchWorm and the first pass or two was really dirty and had a few lead flecks on the patch as well. I did 3 patches wet, front and back and 3 dry front and back. Hopefully she'll be back to being a laser tomorrow?

Hey Jimmy, Camp Boylan here..

I have heard that slugs do foul the barrel a bit more, but I would not be too concerned about the new Mini accuracy just yet. I was out with a local shooting buddy at his range on Friday for the first shooting session with the new Taipan Vet Long .25 and had a similar experience. Although, mine came shooting the .25g .25 JSB at around 950 FPS, too fast. I could not buy a dime group at 50 yards ( my averages were between 3/4" and an inch), but as my friend said I need to shoot 500 rounds, let the regulator settle in and definitely start using the speed dialer to play with HST and different velocities. I expect you are doing the same.

re. your analysis. Boy, you take good notes! You were probably one of those grade school students that got constant "A's" on his tests, while I was in the back of the class standing up trying to see your answers! JK, and teasin' as usual.

That Boss can even shoot at 46 yards ( no surprise), and 3/8" sub MOA for five 5-shot groups at 46 yards is still amazing. We will compare notes as we experiment with our new toys I'm sure. Also, you mentioned wind picked up. I am sure that may have had something to do with your higher averages, so would be curious to see that same type of testing with mild or no wind.

I need to take better notes when I test, so I can track progress.

Tom

Tom, congrats on the Taipan.

Yes I should have know the slugs were fouling the barrel more with more friction because the 34 grain slug was traveling 60 fps slower than the 34 grain pellet.

I did mange to get out and shoot a few groups right after the rain, but then the wind set in worse than yesterday.

The first group out the gate was high and I realized I had messed up and put 25 grain pellets in the mag, but still pulled off a 0.65" group with those babies flying at 1013 fps.

Then dumped those out and put in the 33.95 gr MK2's first two groups 0.37 " back to back before the wind came in. By the time I got to the seventh group it was really bad as it almost blew the pellet off the paper.

So I kicked out the first group and the last group and averaged a 0.554 for 5 groups. Not to shabby, so the Mini is on the Cricket pup's heels for second place now! I'll be doing some more gun competitions between my Crickets and FX in the future. Need to move the target to a clean 50 yds.

Here's this morning's experiment

I couldn't stand it. Had to try a few slugs again. This time I lubed the Nielsons. I sprayed some Slick 50 on a napkin and gently rolled them back and forth on it. I knew they would be shooting low because they were traveling 60 fps slower than the pellets of same weight so I adjusted my point of aim. First group shot low and left so I moved poa to top right edge of the one inch square. Wow, got a 0.44" group on that one. Then I moved over and shot two more targets with the pellets just to compare. The pellets just did edge the slugs out. It was fun to do, but I see no need to shoot pellets over the slugs as the pellets are actually producing more power with the same tune on the gun.

Jimmy

This looks great to me. I think the mini is settling in here.

Heading to my outdoor range Tuesday with the Taipan.

I will post results

Look forward to your results Tom.

I meant to add that .55” CTC average for 5 groups with the MKll’s (especially with wind kicking in for 3 of those groups) is darn good. First two groups at .37” is sub MOA and it looks like the 33g likes the Mini.

I’m going to try the MKll’s first at 50y and chrono, before I mess with HST. Also need to check 25g King’s too.

Just a quick update.

My Taipan had a minor issue and I had to send back under warranty. Not concerned, and as soon as I get it back I will again put it through its paces to assess 50 yard accuracy.

I did shoot my Safari .22 Redwolf yesterday, but the wind was between 10-20 mph, so it was an exercise in futility. Shot Twelve 5-shot groups for an average of .71" ctc at 51 yards. I need to try this on a calmer day, but I wanted to get one more range outing in before Christmas. I have the pics, but since these are not great and I only tested one gun, I decided to bag it.

Hey buddy

Haven't been doing any shooting here. Seems like everyday I want to shoot it's either raining or crazy winds. My yard never gets the chance to dry out? Praying for a drought! LOL

Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and you get the Taipan back soon.

Quick update, tried the 33.95 JSB MK1's as per Derricks advise. Holy Moly.....

The MK1's are lights out! She definitely prefers them over the MK2's. Lovin it! She should be able to hang with the Boss now?

Pulled the gun out of the case, checked for air, loaded a mag. First five shots low on #1, adjust scope and bingo…..5 shots on target #2 even better. 50 yds, 33.95 MK1

That's some purrrdy shootin right there Fuss! Love the comparisons, I hope to be able to put up some groups from the new Continuum soon. I'm spending some time each morning trying to get it tuned to where I think it can be. Will share when I am able. Hope all is well!
