H&N Slugs - "Black"? ( really dark in color )

I got my first tin of these to try out / test. ( .22 cal - .217's, 23 grain ). I just opened it up to take a look at them - see what they look like compared to the FX Hybrids, NSA's, etc ... that I've been playing with / testing, etc ... ( flat bottom?, concave bottom?, really dished - almost pellet like bottom?, etc .... ) Immediately I'm struck at the almost "granite countertop" sort of look they have. ( ???? ) All of the other ones are a dull to kind of shiny silver.

Just curious - have you guys seen these? In the end I don't care what they look like - and if they shoot well out of my barrel the woodchucks ain't gonna care either. ;-)

I probably should have searched first before opening my yapper <grin> - but right after I posted this I googled "H&N Slugs color" or something like that and sure enough one of the very first hits that came back was this thread from right here in AGN from a few months back. Apparently it's pretty "normal" for this brand? I wash and lube all my ammo's and I'm inclined to do the same with these . . . . they are kind of "bizarre" looking things. ( lol )

You should bottle that black gunk after washing and sell them as GENUINE H&N ACCURACY LUBE!

I didn't check to see if they were any harder or softer than a regular pellet or NSA slug (which is bright silver when washed).

I just had an email interchange with H&N — they are very attentive to customers!

And yes, their slugs are made from almost pure lead (more lead than their pellets which are 99.5% lead and 0.5% tin), and thus their slugs are softer than their pellets.

How their hardness/softness compares to NSA, JSB, FX, Griffin, ATV, & Co — I'd love to know! 😄 This is significant to hollow point expansion....

The dark coating is intended to prevent oxidation and reduce lead fouling in the barrel. That is all the magic.

@JungleShooter: I am particularly attentive to customers who speak German...

... just kidding ...

Are .25 and .30 in the works? Hope so.

Yep. We will start with .25 production soon. .30 will be the next caliber.

have you got .25 slugs to work now . How soon is soon ?

So I've just started looking at / weighing these - I know, I know -- there is a hot thread going on here re: the merit of sorting but - I do it anyway.

I'll tell you what - these weird looking things ( because so dark - lol ) are WAY more consistent so far weight wise than the last batch I did of the JSB Knock Outs. These are supposed to be 23g and indeed - so far anyway - far and away most of them are in fact 23g. NICE. Well done to H&N mfg and QA / keeping them consistent. I'm hoping to shoot some of them in a few days to see how they do out of my barrel.

I finally just shot a small batch of these just to give 'em a go. I've been, and will be for the foreseeable future, shooting with the 25.39 grain jsb knockouts and have my gun tuned for them - and they shoot really well out of it. I absolutely was not going to mess w/my tune or change anything . . . (lol)

I setup the paper target at my zero which is 40 yards and lobbed three shots at it. I knew I was hitting it but as they were landing in the black and daylight was going away I couldn't really tell ~where~ they were landing. So I grabbed one of the shoot-n-see stickers that I have and walked out to take a look, and stick that on over it. Indeed - a little high and to the left. OK. I put the sticker on, went back to the table and adjusted the windage turret a couple of clicks to the right. I took my chrony too but alas . . . it didn't read ( not enough light ) so I have no clue how fast they're going. the JSB Knock Out's run at 933fps. These are most likely going a bit faster but . . . no clue unfortunately.

See pic below. I figured these would fly a little "hot" as they're a little lighter and indeed they do BUT - they shoot pretty well too considering the effort I did to tune for them - which was literally nothing. ;-) I wasn't exactly "hard aiming" either here - ie; shooting for precision - just winging them ala - " . . . wood chuck in the cross hairs - pull the trigger before he moves -- pew!" "... mr squirrel out there at 40 .. line up a shot on him, don't dawdle . . . pew!" "..... another chuckie . . . . cross hairs on target, don't hover on him - just line him up and <pew!> wack him!".
