GX CS4-I question(s)

Recently got one and the GX filter and tried to fill with an additional (big golden) filter after the GX one.

The pump does randomly stops anywhere between 240 and 280 bar no matter where the auto stop is set. I already cleaned the check valve and let it run without valve for 4-5 hour to get excess gunk out of it but it keeps doing it. I also plugged it into a separate 20amp outlet to make sure it’s getting enough juice, no dice… it fills a dead head to 300 in 24 seconds though so not sure what’s going on…

I meanwhile tried only the big golden filter and no GX filter, same thing. Then reversed it, meaning only the GC filter and it seems it’s now pumping higher but not all the way to set pressure (stopping at a smidgen below 300) but not sure how an additional filter could cause this (doesn’t cause any issues with a YH…)?!

When I used only the GX filter and it went up to 300b I also noticed that the water tank was getting fairly hot. I could keep my hand on the plug for like 5 seconds but then it became too hot to keep my hand in the same spot. Topping off a 6.8l from 240 to 300b so running for maybe 30-45ish min?! Since this is my first GX I don’t know whether that’s normal?!

Hoping you guys have ideas and can enlighten me, sorry if this has been asked before but a (admittedly quick) search didn’t provide any results. Thanks in advance!

The compressor output is very small so you probably have a leak on the Gold filter assembly. Soap and water will help you track it down.
Thanks! Works just fine with the YH though… and sorry if a stupid question, but why would a leak in the filter make the pump shut off?!

Will reseal anyway just to be sure…

Your model has a thermal saftey on the pump head. Do you have bubbles in your water supply? You could unscrew the thermal switch temporarily and see if the problem goes away...is the water pump working?
Yeah it should have a temp switch. But when it stops I bleed the line, turn it back on and it tugs away immediately. I’ll try to measure the water temp directly though to see. Anyway, the random shutoffs when the pump gets close to bottle pressure occur even at first attempt when it ran for maybe 5-6mim tops to fill the filters. At that point the water tank plug is still cold and temp should be down…

Edit: yeah water is flowing, no bubbles. Will check the what happens if I unplug the temp sensor though to see.

Yup, there are a number of us who have experienced the random shutoffs. I returned one only to find the same random shutoffs existed on the new one. I use the CS4I to top off a 6.8 tank, say from 250BAR to 300BAR, sometime much less. The shutoffs occur 5-7 minutes apart and begin immediately after turn on. I've tried following numerous suggestions from other forum members but I've not been able to isolate the cause.

So I've become a babysitter and repeatedly turn it back on when it stops.

When I queried CS4I tech support about this issue their response was that I should be using the bigger model to fill my 6.8 tank. Maybe they think I'm filling from 0 to 300BAR...But really, you mean I can't turn this thing on for 5 minutes before it shuts down?

So on the flip side, other users don't seem to have this problem and are able to use the CS4I for extended periods without experiencing shutoffs. Luck of the draw I suppose. It's just so damn convenient to have next to where I shoot. I really want to show it some love....

But I'm past the time to return it (besides, been there, done that) and so I've just decided to deal with it.

I have never heard of a GX compressor running that hot. Make sure your water is circulating, also there this long skinny pointy thing that came in your toolkit. That is there just in case you get some type of crud in the water pickup which is a tiny little hole down on the bottom of the water tank. You can remove the filler cap and reach it with that skinny pointy tool, just poke it and make sure it's open. If the problem continues I would be on the phone with GX or wherever you got the compressor from.

Just my two cents, good luck

Weeeeell that sucks though?! Would annoy me quite a bit to be honest… I emailed Gx, let’s see what they say…

What is the build date on the QC tag?
Gonna check tmrw and let you know.

yeah water is circulating… will let it run tomorrow and try to get the water temp directly.

A friend had a similar problem with a new CS4-i. The culprits were a faulty power supply and circuit board.

Try running your compressor on DC. That is how my friend identified the problem with the power supply.

Yeah intuitively I would have said power issue as well since it even happens after a few min when it is still definitely still cold and not even warm but once it has to fight bottle/tank pressure… hence trying it on a separate 20amp outlet…
