Ground Squirrel --- Robbing The Cradle --- Taipan Vet Long .25 + Hades

Mr. JohnnyPDX and friends,

I like the wandering threads, very interesting.

I was able to get a rat from the firewood last night, he gave me a peek of his head and the .25 JSB Exact King 25.39 gr finalized the deal.

Fishing has so many variables, learning tips and tricks from you guys is awesome. Hook types, line twist, blade shapes, just like pellet shape, weight, speed, BC and expansion. Wow our hobbies can get real complicated and most of all, never boring. I feel very fortunate to be able to share the fun here with some very good people.

We have had success top lining these 2 lures behind a little 50/50 sidekick, and of course the trailing hook is tipped with a bit of crawler for final effect.

The weather is supposed to be warm for a while and I know the ground squirrels will be active soon, I may be able to lower the population with the Taipan Vet .22 long. I practice almost everyday to be ready for some pesting.

Good luck with your pesting, stay healthy and safe

Those lures behind the blade look deadly and congratulations on the rat. That headshot didn't even hurt one bit I reckon.

The 50/50 seems REALLY COOL to me and you know it works. Are those trout heading to the smoker?

I fish from a newly acquired 14' kayak mostly now so I can stop being a 'bank maggot' and hang with The Missus. I need a motor for trolling.

Ok Randall I'll not in the future claim that a Kasmaster is expensive. I know why you guys will pay the price and I understand... you're out on an expensive boat with $1000 (lot more probably) of fuel that WILL get used and so you gotta 'go all in'.

The reels are several hundred dollars each with $100 of line plus all the other stuff.

I get it and would love to see one of those CNC lures!

Johnny, fishing is expensive as you know no matter what type we do! It took me years to accumulate the set ups I have now and I don’t have nearly as many of them as most guys do because it is so costly and I learned to service my own reels to save dough! Most of us on long range trips share the cost of many of the pricier jigs, line and set ups to help off set the cost. I actually lose more trout lures than salt water jigs! 😂 so it costs me no matter what! Braid is expensive but thank goodness it lasts for years even in salt water! I found a somewhat new flouro that is cheaper than Seaguar thankfully. Here are some photos of the CNC milled surface iron...crazy that they machine these! Tight lines!

Arrowhead, great trout haul and wonderful lures! I find the tubes/teasers to work exceptionally well too! Great shot on that rat with your Taipan VL .22...fantastic PCP’s! And, yes, it is fun to wander in a thread especially if it’s about fishing! LOL! Tight lines fellow Airgunner/fisherman!

Mr. JohnnyPDX and Mr.Ranchibi,

This is great, I am in amazement at the connection between pellet rifles and fishing in one place. An old guys dream come true, thanks guys, my days are much brighter.

Yes the fish we catch end up in the smoker and then shared with my sons and my Moms....yes I said Moms. I am one of the blessed guys that still has a Mother in Law and Mom!!!! I am in my seventies and the Mom's are in their late 90s. They both enjoy the fish we catch and my wife sometimes makes a fish stew which is a big hit, made with rock cod or if we are real lucky halibut. Yeah we love fishing fresh or salt, just don't get to do it as often as we used to.

We fish near kayakers sometimes, one in particular put us on to a good lure, he was trolling with a small 12 volt battery motor. He was catching trout to feed to one of the resident eagles, a really cool guy. Jakes lure, reminds me of a super duper, gold with red dots.

I was down by the log deck a little while ago and sure enough the warm temps thawed out a ground squirrel. I managed to walk back up the hill to my shop where the Taipan Veteran .22 long lives. Got my pellets and tripod and snuck back down to my hide. Easy 30 yard shot for the Vet, in one ear and out the other. This is the Vets second ground squirrel, but the first one I could recover and do a photo shoot. My picture taking is very sketchy and I am too far gone to remember what my wife explains on how to do it properly, so this is the best I can do.

I used the FX .22, 25.4 gr. pellets I got with the gun from Mr. Annuzzi @ Talon Tunes in early April. I have done nothing to the rifle, but shoot it, it is a very nice performer, I think everyone should have one to shoot. Mr. Annuzzi set this rifle up exactly as I needed it to be.

I shot last nights rat with my "Rat Rifle" a Benjamin .25 Marauder, it has an ATN X Sight II 3-14 on it. I bought used with a known problem I have worked around. It really has worked good for me shooting in total darkness from 18 to 40 yards. The big problem with it, is how heavy it makes my rifle feel. I have to use a bipod or my fold up tripod to support it.

Good luck with your pesting, stay healthy and safe

Mr. Ranchibi,

The surface texturing on the jigs is the best!!! Very talented work by artisans of the tackle world.

I know just the place I would like to drop one of those, there are some rock cod and halibut that would eat that like candy. Captain Cat (my wife) wants to get on the salt soon...stuff just comes up and takes priority.

We fish for salmon, rock cod, halibut and used to crab... some scoundrels made off with our crab pots 2 years ago. I am really wandering so I better close this off.

Dumb question time..

are they solid lead?
you must custom paint them?

Johnny, there are no dumb questions with me! That one is a surface iron, usually for yellowtail, but can be for tuna or wahoo and it's made from aluminum (light in weight), throw them (8-10ft rod) toward the boiling fish and have a medium slow retrieve....wham....splash hook-up!. They also make yo-yo jigs (heavy, made from brass or lead) with pretty much the same shape....these you drop to the bottom and reel in semi quickly, usually the yellowtail will hit them 2-3 cranks off the bottom but sometimes you have to find where in the water column they are swimming 50-200 foot depth. The big yellowtail (30-90lbs) will rock you if your drag is not set heavy enough by rubbing the line into the rocks or structure (where they usually hang) so, you need to keep their head moving toward the surface or you will lose your jig! Once they hit the jig, the winding comes to a complete halt but you just keep winding and that sets the hook and keeps their head coming up and away from the bottom. I usually fish yellowtail with 50-80lb flouro and 30lbs of drag. We were catching trophy 50lb'ers a couple years ago but would sometimes hook one 60-70lbs....hooked one and after a few cranks with the rod tip moving 3 feet up and down (40-100lb 7 foot Phenix Hybrid rod, very stiff fast action) the 80lb braid popped sounding like a 22 going off! Strong strong fish. The big ones are called home guards as they protect a territory from smaller ones. Yellowtail are from the jack family of fish species. The big ones pull like someone attached a large pitbull to the end of your line and called it! LOL! It's quite a workout catching these using yo-yo's...you're allowed 15 of these and I usually limit out and catch some for the crew, when I return from this trip, my arms are swollen! LOL!

Arrowhead, are those dungeoness crab!?....yummy! Rock cod is one of the best tasting fish in the ocean! I'm sure you get ling cod occasionally if you run into rock fish! Boy, salmon, rockfish, halibut....all great game fish and all make great meals! Tight lines, keep safe and healthy sir! Oh, and please eat some crab for me! LOL!

Mr. Ranchibi,

The crab to the left is what we call a rock crab, (sweeter meat) the others are Dungeness crab. We fish out of Moss Landing and it is near the south end of the good Dungeness grounds. Ling cod are a bonus fish just like the halibut is for us. Other fish we like are the Sand Dabs, Starry Flounder and Petrale Sole, we have had many a good family fish fry with these flat fish.

We are not crabbing like we used to, we would soak the pots over night and go back the next day and pull them. I mentioned before that it got soo bad scoundrels were pulling your pots and stealing them, after 6 pots stolen we just sold the others and quit. I could not afford losses like that for the few crabs we got, wife and I were allowed 10 each a day which we worked hard for. We were sport fishing and did not sell any, no way to make it worth our while.

Good luck with your pesting/fishing, stay healthy and safe,

Arrowhead, I have never tried rock crab, sounds absolutely delicious! I am so sorry about your pots getting stolen! That is horrible and you are sport fishing for table fare, I am truly sorry! You live in a special area for fishing, enjoy that and keep safe! I wish you and your wife luck in all your fishing endeavors!

I checked out of here to shoot some pics at a famous Oregon iris garden yesterday afternoon and brought the Taipan because we would be within 3 miles of a dairy I frequent but ended up at a winery after the garden. Had one sip / tasting, I am the driver, of a Cabernet Franc and dropped some serious change their.

Thanks for clear explanation of about the use of the lures! I could see tossing one on top of their heads and getting slammed, what a hoot. We do that with silver salmon using various simple spinners. Just idle along casting then when you see one jump hit full throttle and get close to them and start the bombing, it works.

I blew up an abdominal hernia on some big sturgeon so 50+ lb pitbulls on the end of the line is maybe not a good idea for me but I definitely get the attraction!

The Super Duper is a great lure and I need to stock up on those, currently have ZERO. Sorry the douchebags stole your pots and I'd gladly flatten all of their tires for you.

Just bought a Sony RX 10 IV camera. I will be reading the manual a LOT.

Mr. JohnnyPDX,

See what happens when you take a few hours off from your ground squirrel posts, the crazy old guy and friends sorta hi-jack things....that will teach you.

I did not know about the butter delivery services developed at Oregon Dairies, my wife (Cat) always suspected it though.

The new camera is way over the top awesome, you have the ability and eye to share what you see with the rest of us. I can really appreciate the first image you shared with the camera, the iris is a mother's day flower for us at our place. Cat dug up and planted some wild iris plants in her garden, that grow along the hydro flume. It was sort of a challenge because those plants are not supposed to tolerate trans-planting. Every year they bloom around "Mother's Day". You should of felt the "nod of approval from all mothers today"

.

I'll pass on the tire flat help...Cat named our boat "Dead Man's Chest" and in small print under that it says one way fishing trips. Those stolen pots carry some very serious future regret !!!! Enough about that.

Hernia from big fish....sorry man!!! My wife has a leash on her favorite rod and reel so she won't loose it over the rail, but refuses to wear any personal floatation, me I don't have to worry about any of that, I never hook big fish + blubber floats. That is a whale of a tail.

Good luck with your pesting/yaking, stay healthy and safe

Mr. JohnnyPDX,

I guess we don't get to have peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner any more, ah geez...fresh salmon again!!!

Wow, that is what we dream about down here, just one of those bad boys would last me forever.

We have to head down to the city today, Cat has a bad tooth that needs some attention, never complains about it, but I can tell it is bad!!!

You know every vessel needs a name, think of a good one.

Good luck with your pesting, stay healthy and safe

Johnny, BEAUTIFUL photo of the iris from your new Sony RX10 mkiv! I have a Sony RX100 mk iv...all great minds think alike! LOL! It is a hoot to catch yellowtail on jigs! Catching fish on lures is by far my favorite way to fish with fly lining next. Those chinook are MASSIVE, tasty too! Woo Hoo! Thanks for sharing both photos! Sorry about your ab getting hurt fishing....ouch!
