Ground squirrel appreciation thread

Gents,

I visited a new permission for the first time this past Monday and without a doubt, it was my best squirrel safari ever, PB’s included. It was epic!

As there were structures about, I stuck to my Brocock Sniper Safari in .177 shooting the JSB 13.43 Diablos at 820fps. Most of my shots were 50 yards and under, and despite this being our smallest caliber, any squirrel hit fairly ceased to be shortly thereafter. The little 177 continues to impress me, as does the effectiveness of the broadside heart/lung shot. Most times, the squirrel just rolls over SFD. And if they manage to go, they don’t go far.

I set my Roto Bench under the shade of an oak tree and didn’t move for 3 hours, except to fetch more air or pellets. I lost count at around 75 kills. After that I went mobile with my Trigger Sticks, and wacked a pile more. I estimate a body count of 100+ for the day. I think I may have a repetitive motion injury to my trigger finger now.

The ranch manager was EXTREMELY happy with the results and told me to come back anytime I wanted. He said the next day, the killing ground was carpeted with squirrel carcasses and vultures.

I took one snap at a road I called “The Trail of Tears”. I think, based on the photo, the name is entirely apropos. The road was 40-50 yards from my bench.

And all of this occurred in an area of about 1.5 acres…on a 1400 acre ranch. I think I’m going to have a busy summer.

Dude that’s so rad… how do you go about finding a permission like this?

Also I fully agree with the broadside shot in squirrels. I prefer it to the headshots actually. With my slugs it just instantly stops them dead which I like.

Well @Zebra13 it's not the 100+ squirrels you got lol but here's one from today.

Daystate Pulsar
16.5g Varmint Knockers @ 894 fps / 29 fpe

Squirrel was at 38 yards and I hit him a bit low (I'm zeroed at 50 yards), and here is where I'm glad for the extra penetration because I don't think the 10.03 JSB Knockouts that I've been testing would have been as effective, don't think they'd have penetrated nearly this much.

Hit him in the neck instead of his head but the 16.5g broke his neck, travelled down the spine a bit and almost broke through the opposite shoulder, slug was just sitting under the skin.

Another squirrel for the stew!

Taipan Mutant .22 and Western Mordax .25. This was 1/2 of how much we actually hit. The rest are below ground getting canabalized by their buddies.

damn, not so many around my area...kinda sparse in the desert. Sometimes I wouldn't mind going back to the woods in Wisconsin for a few days, quite the difference in the number of critters runnin around

Oh very nice. Yeah that desert down there is next level. Up here in Saint George it’s a mixture of a bunch of stuff but all of it hot and dry… still not as hot or as dry as y’all though!
Was 102 today, up to 109 by monday. and i'm up in the mountains, even hotter in the valley

I got my HW100 Sporter Carbine .22 with moderator, a few days ago from AoA and to my surprise they had mounted the scope, Athlon Helos BTR 2X12. My first PCP air gun. I promptly shot it at 15 yards, all the farther I can shoot in my back yard. First shot I wasn’t sure it was working properly it hardly made any sound and didn’t appear to hit the target. I walked closer to see if I could find where the pellet went. It hit the black spot in the center of the target. Love at first sight. I shot it a bunch and found out it liked JSB Match Diablo Hades 15.89 grains best. Took it out and shot it at 25 and 50 yards. At 25 yards it was about an inch high and at 50 yards it was 1 1/2” low.
You guys probably all know this but it’s new to me. I could see the pellet going down range in the scope towards the 50 yards target. With the scope at 12 power, amazing.
I know this is getting long and I’m coming to why I posted here. I’m going to try to post pictures of my ground squirrel, 13 Stripe Ground Squirrel and bunnies that are destroying my garden.
Let me know if I posted in the wrong spot.

Hey brother welcome to pcp world! I’m only like 6 months ahead of you so I know how you feel right now. I’ve got terrible news for you though…. This stuff is addicting so there’s a 95% chance this is your first pcp and not your last 😂😂😂 RIP your wallet… beyond that you could not be in better company, myself excluded lol I’m actually super annoying…. Others may have had different experiences but for me everything about these forums has been positive. A LOT of knowledge being shared so I’d recommend paying attention to what the salty dogs say about guns or tuning. Beyond that just have fun and continue sharing your hunts! My weekend was a total crash out due to Forrest fires, a flat tire and an even flatter spare hahaha…. So I’m living vicariously through y’all. Only thing I hunted was a little Navajo sandstone and a Juniper tree lol.

My favorite two-fer. .22 Cricket mini Carbine, 18.1 gr JSB at 55 yards.

Very nice!!
