Green Mountain Barrel for Texan Update!!! $65.00😀

Well I finally made it to my best friend and jet 13x40 lathe. The barrel was a rough blank 1.25 inch round and 25 inch long. I left the threads long on the barrel. My thinking is tightening the Donny FL right up to the frame tight in tension no weight hanging off the barrel. A emperor with extension is heavy for sure. I left the area from the bushing area and entire length of frame a full 1.003 inch or something real close to. I want boring accuracy and stiffiness!!!! I have carbon fiber to lighten it up with but for now I just want accuracy hopefully😁 Factory Texan 34 inch 50 barrel with full quarter inch carbon fiber sleeve for comparison. The factory barrel with carbon wrap is lighter at 34 inches compared to 25. The green mountain is a 16 twist. The barrel looks good but I had lapped it and now it looks.great in the borescope anyway s. My question is how to drill the holes in the barrel for the set screws??? I know how to mark them fine.... But haven't drilled round stock.before.... As always thank you friends

If it were mee id stick the barrel in a mill and index (mill a slight flat) two sides in one sitting + a slight flat at the top (this will become important later)!
Now you can clamp it in a vise at all times and always at exactly 180deg.
About that i'd take a spare grub screw and drill it through on the lathe in a smaller size hole.
The small flat will index the barrel with the top or bottom grubs and secure it square to the milled sides.
That way you can hold the barrel in place with 3 grub screws and use the fourth to mark the exact place for countersinking.
Clamp in a machine vise and countersink the dimples for the grub screws.

Use the flats again when you need to mill the chamber recess.
