Same issue here.. can't even shoot a sling shot in city limits. But! You can get a license to shoot pigeons with a pellet rifle in city limits.

Most my city shooting is in my basement at 10y with a break barrel.

But occasionally I sit down to tune my impact in the basement. Recently moved to a 46g .25 slug and found out.. it's probably a bit much to shoot at my make shift pellet trap (old electric smoker)... I was tinkering last night with the 46g slugs and shot straight through the door, and stainless steel piece of metal, then through both sides of the smoker into my wall (foundation behind it). Oops. That's 7 sheets of metal they were zipping through. 😳🤦

I've not test anything over .22 with 40 gr slugs. Nothing has passed through my blocks. *I'll post pics and videos soon. Gunna have to bring them inside anyways🤷‍♂️🤣one of them needs a new face for sure

Entirely power level dependent.

Anybody on the high power slug train has no business shooting in a backyard.

But, somebody with a FWB300s, or a HW30s, or a 1720T, or anything else under about 18-20fpe can do so quite safely, with a backstop as simple as a bucket of rubber mulch.

I'm also rubbed the wrong way in the sense of property rights. If it's entirely on my property and affecting no-one adversely, who is the city to think they have that authority? It'd be different if innocent bystanders are getting shot, or even if neighbors property is taking damage (broken windows, holes in siding, etc), but if it is entirely contained on MY PROPERTY, and not affecting anyone else......
I have friends ( cop's and higher up 3 letter ) they all would say that the law was not written with people like You in mind , it was written for all those A$$inine idiots . unfortunately you still are required to obey or not get cought .

I understand your feelings. if you have a safe area behind your backstop I could see that working.
I do not. Neighbors on all sides and the farthest is maybe 50 yards. I don’t own an air gun that shoots less than 45 fpe.
Problem with cities is they pass regulations in cooky cutter fashion by necessity. They do lack the ability to regulate on a case by case basis.
The little city I Live in had no ordinance banning the discharge of a firearm in city limits when I moved here. We had people hunting ponds and drain ditches for ducks within 50 yards of houses. One New Year’s Eve I had a guy 5 houses down from me shooting his 45 ACP into his front yard because he had no fireworks. I believe that was the last straw for the city council.
Idiots live everywhere and unfortunately the laws need to be in place to protect the populace from people who lack common sense or concern for the consequences of their actions.
I am sure you are responsible and safety minded. The problem is the city has no way to sort the morons from the rest of society when it comes to making rules.

I completely understand and that's what sucks😪🤣 like the warning on replacement engine belts *turn off engine before attempting to change belts*😵‍💫🤷‍♂️🤣

Honestly doesn’t matter where you go even if you do decide to move. There will always be difficult neighbors or crappy people around to hassle you. I say stand your ground and set up a little indoor range.

Not true. Geographically, the vast majority of USA is a good place to shoot in your yard. Most people shoot stuff a lot louder than our airguns too.

Any place with a town/city ordinance against shooting BB guns is no place for us to live.

Would it surprise you to know I'm looking at some real estate....in a different town though!!!🤣

Long story short; neighbors suck and I am no longer allowed to "shoot my bb guns outside"😳😑*edit; I was previously allowed *
Many possibilities have flown through my mind as what my next approach should be at still getting my plinking time in. SO! I did my research and the law clearly states that I am still allowed to "shoot my bb guns" inside my house oooor see attached picture 😈 plan being I have made pellet traps that will stop any of my highest fps slinger pellets in their tracks even at point blank range🤣🤌🎩 set those puppies up in my shed and lead up some barrels that need it🤷‍♂️🤗what says yall? *will be setting sething up inside soon too😵‍💫🤷‍♂🙃😮‍💨 venting over.
Thank you all for being here🎩👍👍

Mmmmm! I've been eyeballing this stuff for a while now too! Diff brand but same stuff really. How thick did you "cut" it? *how thin can it be and still stop a pellet?🤔I ask bc I would lllooovvveee more than one target to be made from each. Seen some with a metal backer plate as well....was wondering if that's for finding out the thickness needed?🤷‍♂️🧐
My duct seal trap was a wooden frame with a 1/2" high impact polyethylene sheet (12"x12" IIRC) in back. Then I packed the frame with about 1" deep of duct seal. I think it withstood a few shots of 22LR already.

Back in the day someone suggested plumbers putty, which is not at all the same stuff. Plumbers putty just bursts when you hit it with medium or high power pellet energy.

When the pellets hit the fresh duct seal they just get eaten up. After a few shots start piling up on each other, the newer shots are only hitting lead and drop out the front. So include a tray of some kind. Stacking pellets gets a little louder but overall still very quiet. It gets heavy when you have several tins of pellets in there. I eventually threw away the trap. I tried separating the lead from the duct seal but it was just a mess. If I had to do it again I might do duct seal again but plan to throw away the whole slab and start fresh every once in a while.

I have a duct seal trap which is a large baking pan with duct seal blocks. Have put thousands of pellets into it up to 24 fpe. A couple missed the blocks and hit the baking pan. Major dent but didn't penetrate. The hits are visible in the photo. Those were 24 fpe from my M-rod and didn't penetrate the stainless steel. Have a strip of outdoor carpeting on the wall behind the trap. The trap works great. Also I should have a pan to catch the pellets and bits of target paper and duct seal bits, otherwise it'll make a mess. Can see the debris at the bottom. Finally I clip a piece of carboard over the front to reduce ricochets, also helps keep the pellets localized. Regards.

Very true... I can stand out butt nekkid in my yard and fire off my AR's at any time... perk of living out in the sticks. Lived in an apartment when I first got out of the Army and it sucked bigly... Hope I'm never in a situation to be that confined again!

Wow man, condolences for your situation.

Fortunately, my neighbors do not give a hoot what I do as long as I do not shoot at their house, buildings, kids or equipment. I am the guy who makes the marauding raccoons disappear, along with opportunistic groundhogs, and knows how to cook them as well.

Lawyer speak, it goes both ways. The projectile wouldn't "escape" in the scenario I laid out. It's quite captured, right there in the structure that was designed to capture it.
I’m with extradrygin2001. Re-read the ordinance. It says it can’t be “operated” except “within” the structure from which projectile can’t escape. I don’t think that’s too ambiguous because if you fire out the back door your pellet just escaped the structure. Now, “operate” certainly is. That could cover dry firing, or cocking a springer. How about loading a mag and inserting in your backyard?

Simple solution would be to build a shooting lane in your backyard. Don’t know what your deed restrictions are, but sheets of tin are cheap. Put ona roof and there’s your structure.

That's what gets me...they had been complaining about pests n what not " tearing up their stuff" now that I've taken care of the mice n critters; they don't like me plinking? I just don't get these people. Only neighbors I've ever had to not get along with😩such an unfamiliar type of feeling.

You may have gave me my solution! I could fashion a shooting lane as described; even have a door on it to shut🤌 🤔 now I'm looking Ata fence line to use as one wall....could even just lean-to style it...oh the options🤯
