Rangur1 turned me on to my first Hugget two weeks ago, and he suggested the sniper model. It not only came out sweet looking on the 600mm barrel on my 25 cal Wildcat, but it helped the rapport big time. It’s not whisper quiet, but until I hear a whisper quiet one that some folks claim, I’m not believing it. No way, especially if velocities are in the 930 FPS like my wildcat is. 780 to 840 yes I can see it being quiet, as my Marauder 25 cal used to be just a PFFFTTT sound with Tim Hills moderator when I had the 40/40 tune going. But even that gun, when I increased it to near 900 FPS, it now has a thud noise to it, so it’s not whisper quiet.
im gonna slip on my flame suit, and say folks that claim whisper quiet or mouse fart quiet should be more truthful in their description of a moderators results. And if it is truly mouse fart quiet, they ought to at least tell everyone what velocities their guns are putting out, so the newbs out there searching for their first moderator don’t waste their cash, as we all know these things cost a ton for what they are.
I got burned that way with my first DonnyFL. I inquired on which moderator to get for my 30 cal Hatsan Hercules Bully a year and a half ago, and a forum member said get the Shogun, it’s unbelievably quiet you’ll be shocked, they say. Not knowing any better, I even asked Donny himself, told him which gun it’s going on, and he said, yeah, no problem.
Well, $225 later with adapter, and I said no fffnnn way. Barely tamed it. I’ve had to try all sorts of media to replace that cheap felt inside that came with it, to get it manageable. I ended up using 1/16” thick neoprene wrap to muffle it. Sure enough I called Donny to ask “is this it? Is this the best it can do?” And he then asked what FPS is it putting out. I said it’s out of the box between 975 and 1075 in its factory shot string. He says “well, you should’ve gotten the emperor instead”. And that’s where it ended. Shortly after I see on Donny’s site, under the Shoguns, “not for hatsan Hercules gun’s”.
Lifes lessons, and that was one of them. As far as recommendations to this point, only three people have given me the truth and nothing but the truth, and that would be Rangur1 with the reccomendation of the Hugget Sniper, Neil Clague with a whole shroud moderator, and Heavy Impact with the home brew FX moderators. The guns that those moderators are on are NOT whisper quiet by all means. HOW CAN THEY BE WHEN THEY'RE PUTTING OUT 930-950 FPS? My guns now have a muffled thud, which I’m happy with on my 5 acres, where I do all my shooting. To the neighbor 100 yards from me, it’s whisper quiet to him.
