Tuning Gonna be enjoying a .257 1:14 26" Lilja Bull barreled Scandalous soon!

Edited title. I'm sticking with the 1:14. No need for a 1:10

And I will definitely be sharing the groups at 3-600 yards.
What are you long ranger shooters getting group wise?

Slugs of choice? I'm starting with Bowman cast 420.257 Lyman slugs. Supposed to be the perfect fit & results.

Any input? Let's see a 3-400 yard tethered group from a precision shooter and equipment, as my goal is to print em best I can. Set the bar guys.

We are going to have to find another place for the cast bullet shooting part of this hobby .. in this forum to little info sharing about bullet casting bullets molds etc... and I don't have n idea how the other forum works .. I really like this part of the hobby because if you could gain enough knowledge you don't need to buy slugs.. you could cast what ever you need.. im waiting for your gun to arrive to post pics as soon is here ..👊

For the 1:14 twist you can shoot from 60ish grain up to 90+ish. from my expierence wth the Texan 1:14 barrel. Beyond the 90+ish grain the bullets get to long and will not stabilize.

Where did you find the rifle?

Yup! 86 is the ones John sent 19 out of 20 through a 1" ram from 300 yards at 2011 LASSO Shoot.
Well I will tell the story since you asked.

A long time ago Jack Hailey started making big bore rifles.

Jack's son in law, John Bowman perfected the design and builds them for those that want a rock solid platform. The Lilja is threaded 3.5" into the receiver. It's done with such tight tolerance the threads can't be cerakoted by Eric in Oklahoma. That's the only thing John doesn't do himself.
John has designed the Scandalous (any caliber) and the Hailey Boomer. A short barrel in .52 for Whitetail woods hunting.

I was really tempted to get John's .338 Scandalous but most of my shooting is nothing but long range fun. If Pennsylvania would allow AG/Whitetail I would definitely consider a .52 Boomer or .338 Scandalous.

This is where I shoot long range. I have up to 600 yards but I won't be pushing slugs past 400 much until I get Tally rings or a Gen 4 Cold Shot riser. Using low magnification 2ndFP windage reticle and lots of holdover to start. Those mountains of dirt and clean fill give a great visual splash.

I wouldn't be getting this beast if I didn't already have a good compressor & a step down in-line regulator so I can shoot tethered all day.

Loren has good advice on avoiding heavy slugs with a 1:14 twist barrel. I have two .257 rifles, a Texan, and a custom Citrus. The Citrus has a very similar design to a Scandalous. John actually made the stock for the Citrus and has shot the rifle a bunch.

Both of those rifles prefer bullets in the 70-85 grain weight. The one bullet every .257 aficionado should have in their ammunition box is the 257420, a flat nose bullet that's been around for many decades. It averages about 72-74 grains depending on the lead / lead alloy. It is highly accurate as long as you find the sweet spot in terms of PSI of air, and velocity. My Texan loves the 257420 when I keep the speed around 980 fps. The Citrus is pretty much the same though it needs about 3600 psi of air to get the 257420 up to 980psi. The Texan's sweet spot is to fill to about 2800psi, and set the power wheel, pretty low. With the Scandalous you'll have to experiment with air pressure to find it's sweet spot. John is a good guy and will give you the info on where to start.

Arsenal makes a great mold for the 257420, as does Lyman. I prefer the Arsenal, as they sell 2,3,4, and 5 cavity molds.

Oh man! Thats one sweet place to shoot at! Cant wait to see results you will get with it!

I tried 5 shots at 100. Then 2 clicks left & 5 more. Roughly 11-18^F. Winds were not nice nor held off for. I didn't like the Athlon BTR 2nd FP APRL1. Shot on 15x as true. Prone, cheap bipod, loaded forward by my tippy toes. Lol.
Just put a proven scope for hole in hole 100. A SWFA SS 16X mil quad. 72-76 4S Griffin swaged .2573" at around 1040 from the 1:10 32" Lilja but this was shot at 980 1:14 26" Lilja & that Athlon.

I'll post 300 yard groups when it's above 32*F lol. A nice 50+ day would be great & scope I like.

Thanks @Ezana4ce,

I did post a picture of same type 6" red square bullseye target that had been hit once at 305. It wasn't great but I was happy my cheap range finder, chronograph, micrometer, & StrelokPro had got me on target and good enough to be considered a good shot if had been say a Coyote. Not a impressive group but for first shot using a 130 yard previous zero & shot at that time with a 9x Hawke AMX Airmax, I was happy with myself and the Scandalous.
It's got so much unbelievable promise. It truly deserves a tier 1 scope and a mechanical rest. I also am trying to decide what barrel to have shrouded or threaded.

Not bad for 305 on 9x magnification first try. Thanks to John Bowman I know if I miss it's my fault.
