Agreeing with 'cmatera'... I have used a camera flash on glow-in-the-dark items many times! I have not tried a smartphone flash, LED style. But, using my Canon Speedlite 220ex (hot shoe) it has a 'pilot' button so I can use it without the camera. Many mfgs have a pilot, test, or check button that allows for manual fire. I think that since a lot of camera flash units have/use a capacitor to drive the flash, it will out-do a LED. And, it takes small fraction of a second to charge something that is glow-in-the-dark. Anyhoooo... maybe this can add to your fun!!
