Spent 7 hours hiking / hunting a tiny portion of the 5900 acres of State Forest at the end of my driveway. Very fortunate there! If you’re on Instagram and follow @airgunner.usa, you may have seen this already.
I encountered a couple of Phantom Squirrels earlier in the day, but couldn’t get a shot. The cover is extremely thick here. 5 hours in, I was exploring a new area and spotted this one, about 60 feet up in a huge oak tree that must be 250 years old. I was only about 40 yards from the tree, so the shot was on a pretty steep angle. Made a nice vitals shot and was floored by what a beautiful and large specimen it was. If it were a feeder-fed city squirrel, it’d probably go 2.6 lbs! Also bagged a beautiful (and quite large) black-phase Eastern Gray.
