Ghost and The Ranger XR

Well, before I headed south and east I allotted 2 hours to head out to my old permission near Pocatello to debut Ghost and The Wraith. After 2 previous days of super high winds the winds were light enough to hunt and I had some time.

I arrived in Ghost and brought the gun I am now planning to take ownership of, especially after today. The Ghost is my 2022 grey Subaru Outback Wilderness and the Wraith is the Brocock Ranger XR in 177. I was shooting JSB 10.34 gr Heavy shooting at 785 FPS and shooting at 14.3 FPE.
This is the first time I have been at my old permission since I moved to the Seattle area. The farmer was glad to have me back, and I my traditional dozen donuts.
The weather was bright blue Idaho skies. There were a lot of sparrows, doves young and old but not many starlings or pigeons.

Carrying the Wraith I found it to be on par with Shadow, my Uragan Compact, maybe a tad lighter, though for sure a bit shorter. I had a DonnyFL Tatsu on the gun. I left the bracket for my scope cam on Shadow which is in the gun safe which is in the car…totally inaccessible.

The first quarry taken was a collared dove taken at 53 yards from top of a bale of straw. And as usually I attracted a crowd.

For about 30 minutes I wandered around the paddocks and stalls. And came up with some doves and a sparrow.

After a couple of doves I headed over to the stockyard for about 45 minutes of my two hour window. The whole total for the stockyard was around 10, a couple doves tumbled down the hill. I got one pigeon, the days of the massive pigeon herds at the stockyard are gone, thanks to me :D The young doves were dumb as bricks too.

This is first time I have had the Ranger field. Essentially other than caliber it is the same gun as @L.Leon Atomic (I think he should call the Atomic Atzila. Who’s with me on this petition?) ;). This little platform is truly a winner. Even my fans think so.

Very cool dude. 53 yards is a great distance for 177. I usually tune my 177 to sub 12fpe and I limit myself to 35 yards unless I get a really clean rest. I don't get many long distance shots as most my permissions I've had were inside an old grain silo and and around livestock stalls. I think 14 or 15 fpe is a perfect tune if you need to reach out like that from time to time. What's your max range that you will take a shot with that gun?

Blackpaw:
Convalescing from shoulder surgery has given me some valuable time to reconsider my small PCP herd. Being reduced to a one arm operator shooter most are slow or useless. After the coming rigors of some physical therapy, I am planning on selling off most of the herd. Thanks to you and L. Leon for showing the enlightened world of small platforms. As that is where I am headed with an Atomic Ranger XR not sure yet .177 or .22 and then possibly a AGT Vixen, love that swapping charging handle. Once again thanks to all for supplying your adventures and gained knowledge.

@SHOMER I think if you want purely a backpack small platform gun all around maybe the 22 over the 177. I place to use the Ranger in only small farm settings or similar. I think both guns though are great but for me the Ranger is a better option.
Blackpaw thanks for your feed back and both future purchases would see field duty in an avocado grove as mobile merchants of death. Have a current working day gun Prod cart carried setup and the other as an evening walk about one. Both will be in 22 for sure, as for the AGT I lean toward the Uragan compact like your SHADOW setup. But at this point a Vixen consideration is a place holder, because of my unknown post surgical shoulder factors? Again thanks for your time and insights.
