Getting ready for Thursday.

I have a good friend I’ve known since junior high, and fast forward he’s a retired deputy sheriff for sparks, NE. He’s driving down to hang with me Thursday into Friday. I know for sure he’s never fired a pcp so I’ve been busy getting a target system ready for him to try and provide hours of enjoyment.

So with all scrap wood laying around, screws, wood glue, and a rubber pad that a buddy gave me got this all built and assembled.

26” wide x 22” tall, back side is 1/2” thick rubber padding over 3 layers of 3/4” plywood glued and screwed.
The 2x6 fascia piece has 11 holes drilled to hold 11 golf tees with paintballs on top, and in between the holes are cuts to hold playing cards sideways,

The flat 2 x 4 is strictly meant to hold the Dave Larsen swivel target. This will be used also along with standard target shooting with by mulch bucket target holders.

ive sent these pics to him. He’s bringing his Gamo break barrel. He sort of knows I’m into Airguns but has never heard of PCP’s or has seen any of mine. In his mind, he thinks we’re gonna be using his Gamo snd trying to hit these targets out to 55 yards(I did tell him the distance).

I have a feeling I’m going to get someone else into this hobby by Thursday evening, ha ha

I’m curious to see how this rubber padding holds up. The friend that gave me this took it from the tire shop he owns, as they bought all new rubber mats for inside the office. This mat is the type of mat called anti fatigue mats made for folks that spend all day in one spot standing or sitting. I got him into this hobby two years ago and made him a pellet trap out of an electrical pull box and duct seal, and not knowing the layout of his suburban back yard I told him to drape a large mat behind the tarp. Well he took a couple of these 36” wide x 6’ long mats home and asked if I wanted one. So this is the first time using it. I think at 55 yards I think the pellets will come to a halt and drop like the bullets did with K Reeves in Matrix 1. At least I’m hoping, lol

That’s funny, PESKADOT. I think what I’m gonna do is play it by ear. If I see that he’s getting used to the functions and operations of the gun, and as soon as see or hear any sign of “wow I can’t believe these things” from him, I’m just gonna grab a beer, sit back, and just let him shoot to his hearts content. I shoot around 4-6 times a week so no biggie if I don’t get to shoot.

both him and I were very fiercely competitive athletes against each other when we were kids, so I think I’m not gonna go that route when he gets here.

We can keep it as just springer only. I have a Benjamin nitro piston in 22 cal I’ll just have to check sight in on. Don’t know if my shoulders gonna be too happy but I can bite the bullet and go springer only, lol.

He told me awhile back when planning this get together he said he’d like to check out “these Airguns I’m all into”(his words).

so I know he knows nothing about a pcp or even such a thing exists. Like I mentioned to another member I’m just gonna sit back and let him shoot, and answer all the questions he’ll have.

The trap is indeed set……

QBALL- that’s funny you posted that as I reminded me of one time when I lived in the suburbs, I had a neighbor across the street that was a big time duck hunter.

well one day a month before duck season he goes up in his garage attic and sees a rat chewed on some of his expensive decoys, so he told me he was gonna set some of those old school victor rat traps up there, like around three of them.
well, not being a duck hunter myself I forgot about that task he had to do till one weekend afternoon I heard a loud scream come from his open garage across the street. Then I heard it a second time.

now these aren’t wimpy a$$ screams. These are yells from a grown man and mixed in with these yells are big cuss words. If more people would’ve been outside like myself they all would’ve heard his screams.

so I call him up to ask if he’s ok. He said he’s fine but his fingers on one hand were FF’d up. I asked what happened anf he reminded me about the rat traps he had to set. Well, twice, he went to set them, and twice he went to put the bait on the trigger paddle of the trap AFTER he had set the trap. No lie,QBall. It was one of those moments where you had to be there to witness it.

So, yeah, I had to explain to him that the bait goes on before setting the trap, lol

Thought I’d do a follow up on the get together with my buddy.

I’m never one to be unprepared if I can help it, so minutes before he showed up I completed the last of the finishing touches to the target board-

The plan I had in my head was to start him slow. The one thing I didn’t want to do was make this fun event too difficult that he’d leave feeling like he sucked. If one thinks about it, most entry level airgunners that start off with a box store break barrel in kit form do not start off at 55 yards shooting 5/8” diameter paintballs, but instead set up at around 25 to 30 yards at best to see what the new airgun can do. I also figured that after shooting his Gamo to get it sighted in it would be a good warm up of “what was to come”, ha ha!

So back to the plan- 11 paintballs, then snap in half 11 golf tees, then finish off with the Dave Larsen Swivel Target.

We didn’t shoot till Friday cause by the time he had gotten there on Thursday, daylight was gone in 3 hours. So we went out to breakfast Friday morning and when we got back we busted out the Airguns. But first, he asked if I could check out the sight in on his Gamo break barrel that came with a scope. To cut to the chase, I removed that scope, mounted a new spare that I had, and told him to shoot thru the Gamo scope and pretend he’s Carlos Hatchcock while doing so. We got it all sighted in at 30, I gave him some shoot and see targets along with a spare pull thru cleaner I had, then I busted out my Impact in 22 cal, and dressed in a red/black theme-

we here on AGN all know about impacts and have seen all various forms of this awesome platform from custom paint jobs, to custom set ups like a compact version, etc, so this impact is nothing new, but to a guy that spent his career around real guns in law enforcement and had never heard of a pcp except that it’s a drug that bad guys use, you can only imagine what he blurted out- “THIS IS A FFFNN PELLET GUN?!!!”” WTF!!

He always knew I was into Airguns, but nothing like this. So after telling him this was a designated target gun, I sat him down snd showed him the functions of the impact, what not to do(like double load or pull the trigger with the cocking latch back), and gave him a lesson in loading the mags. We were ready!

So, as one would expect, especially while looking thru s target scope adjusted to my face and eyes, he struggled thru the first whole mag. Once he hit his first paintball, it was downhill from there. He not only was able to pop each of the paintballs, but individually snap in half the tees that carried the balls one after the other. 55 yards all of a sudden didn’t seem so far anymore.

The swivel target proved to be challenging, especially the last two on the right. Just like SHAMBOZIE had said, they will drive you bonkers. But to my surprise, after around an hour and a half into this, my pal was able to nail those difficult buggers.

So, I guess we’re all done, right? Funs all over….not!!

My 26 year old son(who my buddy knows well) decided to put down his chore list to “give it a go”. As it turned out, it was my son and my buddy having a competitive moment while I happily chugged down a coors, ha ha.

They took empty beer cans, stood them

on the horizontal 2x4 that was the ledge to hold tge swivel target, and on the top of the cans laid ibuprofen tablets on their sides and challenged each other to hit the aspirins without touching the cans whatsoever. Within 15 minutes and 8 shots later my buddy screams and hold both arms up(like a touchdown score) when he saw the plume of dust from the exploded aspirin. Then he did two more back to back. My don also was able to do the same. What a great day and I gotta say, knowing my buddy, it’s something he’s always gonna bring up as the top five most memorable times.

So, I shall say it was a success. Great bonding moment, and I feel a lot of you have experienced the same a time or two.😃👍👌
