Gamo vs Cometai

I live in Portugal. Luckily we’re permitted to own 24 Joule/18 ft/lb rifles without a permit. I bought a Gamo Hunter 440 IGT and a Cometa Fenix 400 GP Compact. Both are supposed to deliver 24 joules but honestly the Gamo whilst not in the same league as far as quality is concerned just smashes the Cometa on the range... anyone know why there is such a difference in performance?

From my experience Gamo barrels are spot on in my springers. I’ve had inaccurate guns before and can tell when the barrel just isn’t up to par. I wish I knew their operations or could better investigate. Bergara is also in Spain and known for their barrels but I HATE to admit this but I’ve honestly had better Remington barrels for less then half the cost. If you like the gun, look into putting a GRT on it and you’ll be amazed at the difference BTW the Hunter 440 is discontinued here in America I think, wonder if you have something like what we’d call a whisper IGT. Pics would be nice

I just purchased another Gamo today for testing and tuning. Hope it arrives soon :) I got one a long time ago and was surprised so now I’m certainly “on one” as I believe the kids say.

You are so right... the Gamo barrel is perfect, deadly accurate...right out to 60 metres with open sights.... like shooting with a .22lr... the muzzle blast is similar too which I just love.

The build quality of the Cometa is way out there in a class of its own, every bit as good if not better than any break barrel coming out of Germany... you can see and feel it is workshop built by craftsmen not churned out like a widget as in the Gamo... but Cometa are making completely false claims about muzzle velocity and that annoys me because i based my purchase on a claimed velocity of 275 m/s which is nonsense...

The Gamo doesn’t scream quality... the SAT trigger unit for example seems cheap however it’s still going strong after 5000 shots. The beech stock is basic and the chequering is pretty poor on one section. But at only 6 1/2 lbs with precision truglo open sights the shooting experience is close to .22 rimfire. The power and accuracy are phenomenal but I can’t see this being something I’ll be handing down to my grandchildren .. it’s just not got that kind of build quality..

Might have something to do with the power level, and the harmonics associated.

Gamo hunter 440 is more of a mid power gun. Shorter stroke, less “spring”. Might be easier to master than the Cometa.

That Cometa, in my opinion, is a true magnum springer and capable of probably 50% more power than a Gamo hunter 440.

Cometa have done a great job putting together a quality magnum springer, that isn’t too heavy, and is well balanced, without sacrificing quality of worksmanship/materials.

My opinion, for what it is worth- my favorite springer of all time is my “old school” .177 Gamo whisper. It drives tacks with RWS SuperMag.

Old school Whisper has the best combination of power, weight, and balance of any spring gun I have used. Also does not have any of the shortcomings of the new crop of Gamo breakbarrels, with regards to the pivot or plastic trigger.

It’s no Weihrauch but it is a perfect field gun.

You make some excellent points... the quality and finish of the Cometa are sublime. I’ve never seen a stock like it on a €250.00 gun... it’s like something you get on a decent shotgun.. great figuring. It is a joy to use with virtually no recoil and very very quiet. The gun looks and feels like a high quality product that will still be going strong in 20 years time...

The Gamo 440 is a real beast however in terms of range and penetration... it still packs a real punch at 100 yards. I don’t have access to a chronograph but I’d love to see ft/s and ft/lbs... it would definitely require a firearms certificate in the U.K. and it if you had neighbours it would annoy the hell out of them with its rimfire muzzle blast... it’s a pity the Cometa cannot compete with it ...

We don’t have that model available. It does appear your muzzle break it about as useless as the ones we have though. I hate gamo’s “whisper” brake. I remove the baffles right away. Soon I’ll be experimenting with muzzle weights on my CFR. It would be interesting to get the manufactures to maybe do some tests and instead of a “whisper” brake that disappoints everyone maybe give us a variable weight brake with removable weights or a tension device. Don’t know if it’ll be handy or not but couldn’t be worse.

I am pretty amazed that you’re experiencing the accuracy you claim considering the power output. Although I didn’t see too much gain in accuracy from my down tunes, just a far better shot cycle.

I'm not up to any "real" distance yet. But I've challenged myself to shoot 100-yards, bench-rest probably, sub-MOA, with a cheap break-barrel. And film it properly for any doubters. :)

Right now my best candidate is the Gamo Swarm Magnum gen2 .22.

But I've really gotta find me a good spot around here I can get to easily and spend the days practicing. 70-feet is fine for backyard plinking, but the challenge wears off quickly.
