FX Wildcat Mk3 or Brocock Sniper XR Magnum??

Hey folks,

Relatively new forum member steved192 here. I've been an air rifle fanatic my whole life but got away from the hobby for a long time due to work, marriage, raising kids, etc. After reading this forum, watching videos, scouring specs for several years, I'm finally ready to jump in to the world of PCP (i.e. lay out the cash). I guess the FX hype rubbed off on me as I have been looking at the FX Royale 500, FX Boss, Bobcat, Wildcat, Crown for quite some time, each in turn as the new models came out and features and adjustability increased. I really like the Crown but the sporty bullpup look of the Wildcat has always been tempting. So....now we have the Mk3 out there. It's got most of the goodies that were excusive to the Crown and Impact, including that whole new hammer spring adjustability/power level dial. That pretty much made the Mk3 a no-brainer for me. HOWEVER, the launch has not been without controversy, at least from my particular perspective. I want the .25 700mm Sniper and was excited by the new power claims of "up to 70 ft-lbs". But then came the reports of only 50 fpe, which is no change from the Mk2. Was there supposed to be a power plenum installed? Or not? No answer has been provided and there is no word if the next shipment will have the plenum or other tweaks that will help it live up to the new power claims. I was considering buying the 1.2" or 2.5" Ernest Rowe plenum and installing it myself. But, there are no Mk3's to be had right now and the next shipment date continues to move further and further out. Plus, I don't even know if there will be any available for folks like me after the big wait lists are fulfilled. And then there's the whole debate on FX reliability.... And I am sitting on a new-to-me filled air tank, scope and pellets....just need gun and rings.

So, I started searching for an alternative. Even though the Taipans, AGT Vulcan & Uragan, Crickets, etc all are very solid and accurate, none have ever jumped out as aesthetically pleasing to me as the Wildcat, and they certainly don't have all the adjustability inherent in the FX designs. So, I took another look at Brocock, a brand I had not paid a lot of attention to. And bang - there's the Sniper XR Magnum (.25) and it looks really good in the same vein as the Wildcat! And it's readily available and in stock NOW. So that's the backstory....

The Sniper XR has many of the same features as the Wildcat like side-lever cocking, externally adjustable reg, adjustable power level, etc The Sniper XR Pro's: Huma reg right out of the box. Fore end rail already installed for bipod. Build quality seems really solid. Maybe barrel assembly a bit stiffer and strong, less susceptibility to being knocked around? 480 cc bottle. And the Cons: Less Hammer Spring/power level adjustability, smaller magazine capacity, trigger might not be as good, less power if next batch of Mk3's truly comes with "up to" 70 fpe, can't change calibers, liners, barrel length and of course it costs a bit more too (about $200). And of course there's a lot of other differences between the two brands like barrel technology, barrel length options, etc.

So, for all y'all out there with tons of experience in the PCP world....what are your thoughts? Should I just grab a seat and wait for some more FX's to hit our shores? Or should I give the Brocock a go?

Your feedback, thoughts and wisdom greatly appreciated!!

The brocock is pretty dang rugged, and accurate. It may or may not shoot slugs. The wildcat has liner options to shoot slugs. Thats actually a tough call. If you could shoot both id lean a little towards the wildcat. I have a couple brococks and love them! I also have a uragan and its awesome. My next one will be my first fx and will be a .35 impact. I can promise you if this is your first you’ll end up getting more. Id say go with the proven brocock, and once your more comfortable tuning and learning then get the fx.

I am in the same spot as you. I want to get a new PCP but everything I want that is FX is a pre order at the moment.

The Brocock looks nice but it doesn't have the power I want. I was also looking at the K1, but am not really sure now. I've read something about a factory change and about them changing to a barrel they are now making. I would like to see more on their accuracy and power for 2020 models.

The Jefferson State stuff looked promising power wise, but there again it is a pre order and I hear it is a pretty long wait.

I sent my FX wildcat MkIII sniper .25 in to FX for service over the power level, and it came back shooting 72fpe. I've since tuned it down to about 63 fpe (it loves those 29gr NSA at 980fps). It didn't really like any of the heavier slugs at all at the higher power level :( Still using a higher power level than it came, so the trip to FXUSA Service was still worth it. The only NSAs that shoot good in either of my FX guns are the dish base, which only comes in 29gr now. At 63fpe, I get just over 2 mags from 250bar to 150bar. Not a lot of shots, but they work for me. In comparison, on my DL .25, I get about 3 mags at 48fpe, from 230 bar to 135 bar.

It was so much tho power, I was considering selling it. However, I FINALLY got out to the woods today with the mkIII on a single point sling, and...I'm not selling it. It's awesome in the woods.

I did manage to get one squirrel, 37 yards, through the back of the head and out by the nose, he dropped out of the tree and didn't twitch.

I believe it will come down to if you want to shoot slugs or not. FX seems to have the best cards right now in terms of all round air rifle barrels with their “ superior” line. Competition has work to do as you can have all parts in fine order but without a barrel dealing with your favorite ammunition well all not giving you what you probably expect. I have only recently decided to switch to FX because of their barrel developments as till before the superior barrel came out I believe many options were better than FX . Now however especially if you want to shoot slugs FX has taken the lead and my money 😅😜. The wildcat in particular has always caught my eye since the introduction because it’s design is tempting but till recently my choise was Kalibrgun Cricket and Edgun Lelya 2.0 as those rifles were just built better and were easier to maintain and adjust with pellet use. Now with easy external regulator adjustment , superiot barrel, nice customization options and still that nice exterior the balance has switched to FX for me as I decided that the future of my air rifle shooting is in slug ammunition and with the Wildcat MKIII it ticks ll the boxes . Only communication wise FX leaves a lot to be desired with their customers as has been proven in many threads on this website but obviously they can afford themselves to be a cocky party in that respect due to massive demand for their products. Wimpanzee can write a book about it .....😩

Also I have to say that I do not have experience with the Brocock in combination with slugs but I expect that they are on par with many other brands trying to follow the FX “ superior liner” concept. Due to the production method of FX making liners I believe FX has been able to test zillions of alternatives and get it right. It is a matter a matter of time ( and money) before Lothar Walter , CZ and others do have an allike barrel on the shelves but FX is the reason why we have made such huge steps forward in air rifles hence they deserve my money now instead of the others. The downside of having me aboard however is that they get not only my money but also my attention re what I believ can be done better. FX can offer me a job by the way as their PR manager as I am “ in between jobs” as it is called 😉. I assure them to do better as their current one .

Folks - thank you for all the feedback so far, and keep it coming. It looks like the consensus at this point is that I'm going to need to plan to get both of these and immediately begin saving for a few more soon after that!! (Would love to but dang these things are expensive. Look how much quality you can get in a powder burner with good glass for less than the price of one of these air rifles!!) I'm not poor but the $2K+ price tag to get into the sport is sobering and kept me on the sidelines for a long time.

Wimpanzee - based on my Wildcat Mk3 Sniper .25 interest, and hoping they truly had 70 fpe, I followed your low power situation very closely. I might have been more anxious than you for you to get your gun back and see what FX USA had done to it. (BTW, I'm still not convinced that the only thing they did to yours was add the short plenum extension and crank up the reg. Different hammer weight? Stronger hammer spring maybe?)

Yalel - you and I traded messages and I was watching in thread after thread how you were really pushing for answers on the 50 vs 70 fpe and plenum situation. Of course, that question has not been answered and there's still no telling if the next batch of Mk3 Sniper .25's will be any different. If the Wildcat Mk3 is really only 50 fpe without mods, then the Brocock I am talking about is right there with it (Brocock spec is up to 55 fpe). Also, I was thinking about slugs too but maybe I should get my foot in the door with regular pellets in a PCP for starts...

There is not a large amount of info on the Brocock by the way. Anyone know if they come with a hard case like FX does? I'm not seeing info on the fill probe or fitting type either. Are their User Manuals better? Gun schematics readily available? Repair parts easy to source?

Another one to research is the RAW HM1000x LRT...if you want it shooting at a certain FPE, Martin will build it to your specs....can be a non choked polygonal barrel that shoots pellets and slugs almost equally well....but, there is also a build/wait time....or you can order one form a vendor and tune it yourself. You have a few really good options out there as you probably know. My friend recently purchased two RAW’s and me one and he has been emailing Martin and Martin himself has been very very helpful so say the least.

Interested in Raw HM1000x or Brocock Sniper XR Magnum as a first high end good. Anyone with personal experience with both guns, please share. Wildcat MKIII is on list too. I have information on it.

Thanks

I have a RAW HMx LRT .22 and had a Brocock Compatto. Both are exceptional guns. The RAW has a non choked LW polygonal barrel and it shoots both pellets and slugs, the Brocock has a LW choked barrel which is stellar with pellets. The RAW .22 comes shooting 50fpe from the factory which is 950fps with JSB 25gr pellets getting 50 shots. I detuned mine to shoot the 18gr @ 950fps (36fpe) and gets 75 shots. RAW LRT's are built to shoot long range accurately and are very easy to tune and maintain, simple but effective with the best mechanical triggers (7-9 ounces from the factory) along with Taipans. The WC iii is a fantastic gun, don't have one but I know they can be configured to how you want them to shoot. Will all depend on your wants and needs.
