FX tuning process…

Airgun noob here. Read a Couple of articles and watched a couple of videos on tuning

I wonder if there is any harm at always starting the tuning process with max hammer strength and max preload.

Ernest's video adopt a diff approach: a little more hammer until speed doesn't increase, then a little more reg until speed plateaued, then more hammer etc…

I'm sure he is right, can someone please explain to me why?

Long before Ernest, there was/is Bob Sterne...

Read the link for how to properly tune a regulated PCP air gun. Granted, it doesn't include the information about the valve adjustment on an Impact, but this will get you in the ballpark and is what most tuners use... Not to take anything away from Ernest, he truly is a Master...

On some rifles, starting at max hammer spring preload may cause so much valve stem travel that the hammer smacks the back of the valve and rebounds quickly. That has the effect of a drastic reduction in valve dwell and therefore may produce a lower velocity than if adjusted correctly.

If instead you add preload incrementally until the velocity plateaus, you can be sure you have an accurate picture of the gun's maximum velocity.
