FX Maverick hammer replacement - actual mileage my vary

Good morning AGNers! I wanted to post about my luck repairing my FX Maverick's hammer. Unlike all the smart people reading these threads, when I first got my Maverick, I was too eager to just shoot... read the manual, NO WAY! Well, it bit me in the butt, when, while cocked, I started turning the rear adjuster (hammer spring wheel) and it felt tighter then normal. From that point forward, all my accuracy was out the window :-( Arghhhhhhhhhhhhh, I had marred up the hammer, which I wasn't aware of, just that I'd messed it up.

So, using the AGN forum resources, and a YouTube video from the FX Masterclass, I began the disassembly until I removed the hammer and confirmed that I'd created a burr on the lip/rim. A quick call to Utah Air Guns (great customer service) and a replacement part was on the way. I was a little nervous, putting everything back to in, but I had made detailed notes, and kept all the screws and parts in order on the workbench. It went back together perfectly, and I was operational.

With some expert guidance from fellow AGNer, Lewis, I was back shooting and happy as could be, plus I had the new found confidence to take apart the rifle AND put it back together, working!

Thanks AGN Forums and Lewis.

Ok, back to no notes, How in the heck do you get the hammer out, seriously, I've watched the videos and it all but falls out, I've got something sticking in the path of the hammer, just past the end of it and it won't move. I got this Maverick pre-loved so I have no idea what happened before I got it but I've some ideas.
Have you seen Ernest Rowe’s disassembly video? It’s quite a simple job to get the hammer weight out.

The hammer weight free floats, which is why when you go from pointing the muzzle down and raise the muzzle up you here something loose back there knocking around. Perfectly normal. Upon disassembly your hammer weight just slides out easily.

If you haven’t been hearing that flopping around noise, that means your hammer weight, the wider base that goes into the inside of the hammer and the hammer spring sets against, is galled around the base’s edges and is now seized up inside the hammer. That means when you disassemble your hammer weight isn’t going to just slide out.

I have a Maverick 500mm CF Bottle. Bought it as a .22 and I got a used .30 barrel change kit from here.

FX sent me two other weight hammers to play around with tuning. If you leave the light one in there the Maverick is useless shooting .30's from a 500mm barrel. The heaviest on way to much. So I have the medium one in there and it works well with .22 and .30.

I remember it was very very easy to swap the hammers.

Tune...

44.8grain JSB pellets.
Regulator 1 - 140 bar
Regulator 2 - 105 bar
Hammer adjustment screw - 5.98mm
Power wheel - 7
860 fps

Remove the power wheel and turn the gun so the muzzle is pointing up and the hammer weight, hammer spring and spring cap will just fall out.
To remove the actual hammer you have to remove the trigger.

Yes, too many folks don’t use the correct terminology when describing the removal of hammers/hammer weights on the wildcat and maverick platform. When it comes time to remove, there’s a big difference between the hammer and the hammer WEIGHT.

The hammer WEIGHT is what falls out and is easily changed, not the hammer

When I was learning all about FX dual reg guns I managed to burr the end of my hammer and it would not move freely. Had to remove it and polish it up. Took the time to polish it and the weight. easy fix.

I knew that but had a senior moment. Anyway my hammer weight refuses to play well and come out. It's like the sear...guessing here is in too far for some reason. I'm going to pop out the trigger and see what gives, besides my blood pressure.

10.31.22. Update, degassed the gun, pulled the trigger, sear and got the hammer and hammer weight out as a unit. The hammer weight wasn’t coming out gracefully. There were some nasty burrs and galling holding it in. Some 600 got rid them. Then a nice polish with semichrome. The inside of the hammer was more fun, used a small screwdriver as a deburr tool, got inside with my dremel with a polishing wheel and semichrome, Now the hammer weights slides as it should. Polished the outside of the hammer a bit. Next I polished up the sear contact surfaces, reassembled and wow it works. Now for a field test.

Update to the update. Adjusted the trigger to 8oz, it feels better with things polished a bit. Hammer sounds better too, sadly I still suck at shooting but that's the breaks. So everything works as it should.

Updated update. Had a few minutes today to test the Maverick, except for the old shaky guy that still has a heart beat....no rest on the back only a bi-pod, 30 yards 4 out of six in or touching the bulls eye 2 about 1/2" off, shot some of the target numbers, got 5 out of 6. Trigger broke like glass, totally clean, musta done something right.
