FX FX Maverick Compact .30 Cal - First shots review

Got some FX Atomic and JSB Hades. Shot the Atomics with the same setting I used for my slugs. They are shooting crazy good. Only shot at 30 yards but they are going hole in hole. Second shot I took with them I though I missed paper because I only saw one hole lol.
I'll try the Hades some other time, but I feel like the Atomics are going to be my go to pellet. Even if the Hades shoot better, the margin for "better" is very slim. And the Atomics are cheaper.

Numbers:
15 shot string
FX Atomic
44.8gr
120bar
HS 6.32
843fps
70fpe
Extreme spread: 6
SD: 2.44

Not the greatest numbers. But they are super accurate with the settings. So, who cares about the numbers.

It has been a while since I got this gun. Here is a small update on it.

Had a problem with the gun not cocking at one point.
Todays hint, tighten up the two little set screws on the clocking block, as snug as you can get them without messing them up, be careful.
This was the problem. I honestly wasn't sure what screws he was talking about until I ran into the problem. After tightening up those little screws I never had the problem again. And I haven't had any other problems.

Took out two groundhogs that were tearing up my back yard. One of them was quite large, it's teeth were curling around its head like elephant tusks. Both died just about instantly. Shots were between 20-30 yards. Sorry, didn't think to take pictures.

Currently very happy with the gun. Have barely touched my other guns since getting it.

My current set up:
DonnyFL Koi
DNT TNC225R thermal/night scope
UTG Overbore bipod (very likely this would not fit with a normal scope)
SWP Quick Tune Kit

If those pesky little things come loose again, use a touch of Purple Loctite. I'm thinking about your gun, have you experimented with your bipod over and under your barrel? Reason I'm asking is, structurally the top area of of that is supporting the shroud, even though it's 'bolted onto the frame it can induce some movement. Also you're better off moving the bipod out as far as you can can to the muzzle, give you better control for longer range shots 100+ yards.

I have used an underbore bipod with this gun. I had to when using a regular scope, over bore bipod wouldn't fit. The problem is that it feels unstable. As you said it is best to have the bipod farther to the end. I don't have the extended rails like you have on your guns. I'm sure with the extended rails it would be much better. But from factory the rail is very small and close to the center of the gun.
Having it close to the center like that does make panning and tilting the gun faster. But it feels extremely unstable, even more so when it is top heavy with a scope as heavy and high up as mine.

When possible I use overbore bipods, although not many guns let me do so (normally not enough rail for both a scope and it). They give much more stability, I feel like I could walk into the rifle and I'm more likely to fall over then the rifle. Also it is much easier to get the rifle level, gravity does the work for you. The main problem I have found using overbore is that they have a wide stance. There is sometimes not enough room to use them.

As far as movement when using it, I haven't ran into that problem. Still holding the same zero as when I was using underbore.

Took out another groundhog at my sister's. Apparently it has been fighting with her dog. It was quite aggressive for a groundhog.

Last two I had used the FX hybrid slugs, this time I decided to use the Atomics. Shot it at 26 yards dead center of it's chest. It hopped and then ran away. Waited 10 mins before looking and found it still alive (but moving very little) about 10-15 yards from where it was shot I did not see a single drop of blood. Shot it again at 10 yards to put it out of it's misery and it died after about 10 more seconds of moving around.

The Atomics did do it's job, neither shot passed through. But they didn't seem to penetrate quite enough to do enough damage to get a fast kill like the FX did, perhaps they expand too fast for the thick skin groundhogs have. So, it looks like FX is better for hogs then the Atomics, as long as I don't have to worry about pass through.
