FX Impact with 700mm XBarrel

We have all heard about the much improver performance of the Impact when you upgrade the barrel to the new 700 mm X Barrel. Some of the participants at the Extreme Benchrest who were able to get one did very well.
I had decided to see about getting an Impact with the new barrel with no success. I called a number of their outlets in the US and the best I heard was that I would need to just buy one of the existing models then spent another $500-$60 to upgrade to the X barrel. I wasn’t happy to have to buy I rifle with a barrel that I don’t want but that is the only path currently available.
I contacted Johan who is the son of the owner of FX in Sweden he sent the following reply:

There aren't any plans as of current of putting the 700mm x barrels on the Impact as standard.
This might change but I don’t think that it will in the next coming months.

The xBarrel option will be available as an add on probably in March. I may get one in 30 caliber for my Crown what I don’t really understand why they just don’t upgrade the Impact with that new technology. I imagine they still have a lot of the old barrels in the pipeline that they need to move, I just wish they could be used on their other models and keep their premium line of guns premium.
so for the time being I’ll wait and see what happens in my quest for an accurate premium 30 caliber PCP.

Just because you don't have an X barrel doesn't mean the gun isn't and can't be accurate. Everyone is making a big deal about these barrels. Ted didn't use his and he is the most consistently accurate shooter I've seen. Once you find the pellet for your ST barrel and it shoots well, I don't think the STX barrel is going to further improve upon that.

Near as I could find out is that they don't want to offer the Impact with the "X" barrel yet because they want the Crown to shine for now. I guess the thinking is that it would lure people who would normally prefer the Impact to buy a Crown instead??

For myself personally I don't see why? Those who like the traditional rifle look will always lean towards the Crown. And those who like the Impact Bulpup look will always like that look.

Sad that they are taking that sort of marketing stance, and isolating the Impact lovers to having the spend an additional expense. Or to have to wait for the barrel and possibly playing with the price to keep the Crown sale up?

I agree in a sense, I’m sure there are much better marksmen out there who can shoot better than me using a entry level rifle. I have shot and used an Impact with the current barrel and I agree next to my Crown it’s probably one of the better easily adjustable shooting rifles from FX . Since FX has designed the Impact were it can accept the new and improved barrel that’s the route I’d like to take. All things being equal I should have better results using the new X barrel. In one of his videos Matt from SA showed how he made that barrel switch which he infers helped him be one of the winners at the Arizona competition. I’m not the shot that Ted or Matt are but I like to be able to have the same tools just to try. One other comparison is look at how many golfers have the same clubs as the touring pros yet they never honestly break 100 but have those clubs give them the confidence that maybe one day they will. That’s what I’m looking for. Am I wasting my money? Probably but that my money.

One of the features/benefits of the Impact is the short length. That's why they were originally sold with the sliding shroud. Many (dare I say, a majority) of shooters decided they would rather give up the shorter length for the fixed shroud systems. Today, they're sold with either the sliding system or the fixed system, right?
If you add another ~4" to the length of the Impact it starts getting kinda long. I wonder if they're trying to hold on to the ability to say it's "short" as one of the benefits?
Does it still fit in the case with the 700mm barrel?
Brian, I agree with you that it would be nice to have the option of sliding, fixed, or 700 (with the price difference added on). Although, I can imagine how crazy it would be for a big retailer to have all those options readily available.

I partially disagree it’s been reported than next month they are offering the X barrel as an aftermarket option for the Impact. I like to make comparisons so here is another one. It’s like Chevy only selling their trucks with a 6 cylinder and then only offering the V8 as an aftermarket option. I’d rather get it from the factory equipped the way I want it. I feel the real reason is they just have the old barres in stock and or in the pipeline and they feel this is the way to get rid of them.

I just got an Email from FX and they implied to keep an eye out for the IWA shot show?!
So I suspect that they are going to announce the "X" Barrel as standard for the Impact around that time.
So for now the wait continues! (The Impact with the "X" Barrel is the ONLY gun on my bucket list!)
For me the compactness of the Impact is my #1 priority. I have already started buying the accessories for the Impact that I'm planning to buy. ;)
Who knows maybe by the time it comes as a standard equipment, I'll have enough saved up to buy a Crown also! Or maybe a Night Force scope! LOL!!
Or knowing me I might just have moved on to a different hobby by then.

I do agree with the fact that if you put a 700mm barrel as standard on the impact, you might have to redesign the case. That is almost an extra 4" and I'm not sure it will fit in the case as is. Also, people are wanting a shorter gun, hence the new wildcat mk2 .25. I guess if you were to make the impact long, it goes against the whole design plan for the impact and what people are asking for.

I guess we’ll have to wait until March 9th for the IWA . Perhaps they will switch to the Xbarrel just in the standard lengths to keep the existing footprint consistent. I can always get the 900 mm barrel for use in my Crown and it would be interchangeable with the Impact. That would work for me.

Ted did say that his particular smooth twist barrel was the most accurate he’d ever seen.
Remember also as far as I know in .25 cal fx has only released 1:28 twist rate which is specifically to shoot the 25g Kings which isn’t the preferred pellet for shooting 100y really.
From what I’ve seen shooting the 25g Kings the smooth-x is more accurate than the majority of smooth twist barrels and there aren’t any dud barrels I’ve heard of. That is ‘every’ Crown owner is reporting outstanding accuracy.
You can so easily set up your Impact to be short or long. Change it to suit your hunting situation. If you shoot like Ted sniper style from a bench or prone length is no issue.
