FX Impact Reg Pressure best for .22 and .25 Caliber

I posted the below as a response to the AEAC Video - FX Impact X Master Tuning and Barrel Guide and just wanted to start my own thread of discussion to see if anyone had any advice a reg pressure that would be ideal for both .22 and .25 caliber without having to change it each time I switch between calibers? I was hoping maybe the longer 700mm .25 Barrel would help in my case of not having to up the reg pressure. I would be good with getting preferably above 830fps in the .25 cal and then being able to go back to my 890fps in .22 caliber with only adjusting power wheel and valve and leaving the reg pressure set the same between the two.

I am looking for some advice on tuning my impact. My impact is .22 caliber right now and shipped from AoA they stated the reg was set at 115bar I believe (I know the gauges are not the best but mine looks more like 125, I do have a Keller Leo 2 and the adapter that I found on eBay I just have to get it calibrated and I will be able to get an almost exact reading). At this time I have hammer spring set on max and the valve knob is turned out past the third line. I am getting around 890fps with JSB 18 grain pellets. I haven't shot a complete string out yet but from what I've counted when shooting in the field I am getting over 100 shots per fill. I am happy with this but I felt like the valve knob should not have to be open this much to get this velocity??

I am also wanting to get the .25 cal 700mm barrel for my gun as well and was wondering if having the longer barrel would prevent me from having to turn up the reg to get 800-900fps out of the 25 grain JSBs? If I will need to turn up the reg I guess the only other question I would have would be how bad my shot count will suffer when I switch back to .22 caliber and retune for 890fps again? I do not plan on going higher than .25 caliber or lower than .22 caliber at this point so I am basically looking for the right reg pressure to set the rifle out to get optimal performance out of these two calibers. In the future as money permits I would like to get another impact and have one in .25 – .30 and one in .177 – .22.

Any opinions or knowledge on this would be much appreciated.

Hi Mat. I think the best approach would be to tune your gun for the .25 cal Kings first. Turn your power wheel to max. Start with your regulator where it is at the moment and shoot the Kings over the chronograph.

Slowly adjust your regulator pressure up a few bar at a time until reach your desired velocity. You want the lowest regulator pressure to achieve your optimal velocity with the Kings. I personally would not want to use the valve adjuster to help find your velocity because I’ve found it difficult to get consistency adjusting back and forth. It’s sensitive so I’ve found it better to just adjust the power wheel and leave the valve adjuster open all the way.

Once you have the Kings shooting the way you want switch barrels to the .22 and shoot over the chronograph again and adjust the power wheel down till you get as close as possible to your .22 optimal velocity. Because the Transfer Port restricts air flow more with the .22 caliber you shouldn’t have trouble getting the 18g pellets down to your desired fps. Without touching the regulator.

This should give you the best compromise to shoot both calibers.

Good luck Michael

I will be going through this soon as l have a 25 cal Impact and a 22 X barrel on the way.

A Edgun digital gauge is nearly a must on the Impact. 125-130 bar is what l will be trying.

l find the power wheel on 4 works best for me. I have taken the slack out of it and get great results by using the value adjuster for precise tuning.

Lets us know what results you find.

I have a "Used" Impact, but it appears no one touched the regulator. It's at about 140 bar. This week, with a stone stock 16 month old gun on a standard Smoot Twist barrel (Not the "X" barrel) tuned it to throw the 34 grain JSB's in 25 cal at 830 fps on power setting 3 and turning the valve adjuster in to just barely cover the third line. 25 grain JSB Kings shoot at about 870 on power setting MIN.

My eventual goal is to purchase a .22 kit for the gun and shoot the 25 and 34 grain .22 pellets. Since the weights are the same, the adjustments should be close.

I'm in the "If the regulator ain't broke, don't fix it" camp. I get over 100 shots per fill, and two fills a good day on the bench for me.

In my mind, the regulator isn't the place to start adjustments. All it does is give you a rock solid starting point for other adjustments. Constant Pressure is a must for consistent shooting. So to me, the reg pressure isn't all that important, as long as it's constant. Then adjust the power wheel and valve adjuster screw to meet your needs. It ships at 140 bar in .25, and as long as you can slow the .22 pellet down to your preferred speed, I'd just leave it alone.

Yes, tune to the ammunition you intend to shoot, but I'd tune to the regulator as it stands and if it requires adjusting, that's absolutely lasts.

Just my opinion.

I stand corrected on my opinion, overruled by those that know more than me -

Have a look at this one.

Thank you all for the info on this. I am now in the dilemma of getting the .25 Cal barrel and maybe a .177 barrel for my impact and continuing to play with this gun or possibly buying an Edgun Leshiy as a compact backpack gun for carrying to the deer stand with me next month to keep those pesky squirrels at bay. I have about $1,000 in my airgun fund at the moment so it wouldn't take much more to get the Leshiy bought. Now If I could just sell my Huma Reg Benjamin Marauder in .177 I could do both...

I seen Steve's video within minutes after posting the questions I had and his video answered a lot of the questions I had. I think I will be able to leave my reg set where it is and just play with the valve adjustment to get me where I want with the .25 700mm barrel. If It doesn't get me high enough in velocity I may turn the reg up 5bar or so. I see that the edgun digital gauges are a favorite to put on an impact. I have not done much research on them but I may have to get one if they are that close on reading so I can use it to change the reg pressure accurately and not have to mess with the Keller Leo2 Gauge that I got, that kinda depends on which is cheaper to do now.

Thanks again everyone for the help on this. It is much appreciated. I will add feedback if I end up getting the 700mm barrel soon.
