Btw if they got rid of the 'buffer' / 'damper' effect and went to a solid material such as plastic, then that is just a step backwards imo. Not going to go into all the effects and reasons, as my leading statement outlines the benefit by nature of its name.
If the primary reason for the change in the part material was due to failure (likely caused by user error not adjusting this correctly and over driving the valve into it...)...then they should of made the system more robust to handle those conditions...the design is quite simple actually.
