FX Impact MKII .30 cal 700mm questions

Hi,

I wanted to know how you guys tuned your impact and what kind of results you were getting.

I'm primarily shooting the 50 grains JSB's out of mine but I have a hard time getting some power out of it. Mind you, it's ok for the pellets but I've just bought a slug liner and I will definitely need more power but I will come to that later...

So far, I've tried to get the best out of my pellets but I'm kind of stuck: I received the gun with the regulator set just under 150 bars. I maxed out the spring tension and got to around 870 feet/s with the 50 grains. The gun was very consistent except for the first couple of shots which were always way too slow (Though, I didn't notice any reg creeping on this gun)! I decided to try to increase the regulator a little bit but the speed decreased (could not add more spring tension, I was already maxed out). So, I tried to reduce the reg pressure and went down to just about 135 bars with approximately the same speed of pellet (866-870). Interestingly enough, the problem of low speed for the first couple of shots nearly disappeared, which is great.

Now, I can live with a pellet speed of about 870 feet per second but when it comes to slugs, that's a totally different story. By the way, I wanted to try rather light slugs, so that I wouldn't have to fight too much with my gun to get enough speed and I ordered some NSA .30 cal 47 grains slugs. First thing: don't buy them if you want to shoot them from the mag, they don't stay in place, they turn around completely, forcing you to remove the mag and replace the slugs in their slots. I got almost the same speed with the slugs (just a few feet per second slower: 860) but the accuracy was not there. I guess they must fly much faster (100 more would be nice I suppose). So, I cranked up the reg 5 bars at a time and tried, but the more I increased the reg, the slower the slugs (I went up to a good 170 bars). It seems I would need to hit the valve with more power but before making changes (heavier hammer/plenum....), I wanted to check if this was a "normal" power limit for an impact MKII. I expected to be able to get more power out of it.

To complete my story, I did'nt want to shoot all my slugs at those ridiculous speeds and decided to keep them for later (when I have solved my power problems). So, I thought it would be a good idea to try to shoot the pellets from the slug liner. First, they fly at the same speed and they hit much lower but I found them to be quite accurate which I didn't expect at all! My 2 targets are respectively at 67 and 100 yards and here are a few pictures of the targets I shot tonight with JSB 50 grains from a slug liner. Cold weather (freezing) and getting dark...

67 yards targets: 5 shots in the first target. In the second one, I pulled my first shot (bottom left), so I shot 5 after that.

And here are my results at 100 yards: I post them all, not only the best one...

First target at 100 yards: first 4 shots on the right, then one low (don't know why, probably my hold) and then 5 shots dead center!

5-6 shots per target:

Here its the velocity tune by Ernest. It will get you to the max your gun will do. After you have done the velocity tune replacing the c3 bumper and porting the barrel and probe will get you more fps after that more hammer weight will get you even more. But you will lose some of your power adjustment if you go this route and will need to undo much of this to shoot .177 again. Then you need to do the harmonic tune for best accuracy.

Porting

Be careful with the porting it should be oval shaped/lengthened all the way through then made larger just on the very top not all of the way through. This helps with the air flow. Just doing the oval part will help the most.

After that there is the drilling or removing the side of the valve and adding a plenum and...

Hi, thanks for the links! I'm still stuck at the velocity tune. I knew that video from Ernest (very well done by the way) and that's pretty much the way I tuned my first impact. Now, the thing is, I can't get my gun to shoot faster, following the instructions step by step (I might have done something wrong, though, but I don't think so).

That's why I wanted to get the numbers reached with the other impact MKII (.30 cal 700mm) to check if there's something wrong with my tuning, or my gun or if this is the kind of speed I can expect...

Thanks!

Yes, there was a lot to gain from the little screw indeed but I'm pretty much at the max now.

Thanks for the image of the porting. Do you do that with a dremel?

No Dremel this time. I used a mill bit in my rickety old drill press to make the oval then used a Unibit to enlarge the top. It's not perfect but the best I could do with what I have. Although I would probly attempt the oval with a Dremel I am no longer steady enough to do the enlarging of the top with one.

Nathaniel, thanks for posting realistic groups. I’m shooting a 25 cal and my results are pretty similar. I’ve seen some groups posted lately that I just do not believe . I think you have to push slugs pretty fast to get your best results . I am pretty new at this stuff but I think you can shoot slugs out of a stock IMPACT MK II in 22 cal fine. When you go to 25 and 30 I think we are going to have to modify the guns significantly to get the velocity up there. My gun is with Ken at SPAW right now for his power tune I’m hoping to get another 100 FPS which should help. Slugs have been a challenge for me.

One other thing, you mentioned tightening the hammer spring but when you tighten the preload, you can tighten the little screw until the power wheel will barely move. Going from pretty tight to so tight that the power wheel will barely turn can get you pretty good gains. From there, bolt probe and transfer port modifications along with the C3 bumper, as others have mention will gain you some fps. A round Dremel tool bit works great for the transfer port and a cylindrical bit for the TP...Or you can buy all the parts from England, they'll get here in 5 days. That way you can always go back to stock when you want or need to. Good luck

Are there specific dimensions for the port and bolt probe for the .30 cal?

There are no specific dimensions, per se, except when port matching the transfer port with the rear block, and then that hole is 7mm. (More on this in a minute.) The most critical aspect of opening the brass transfer port hole is to never widen the inside of the port near where the pellet slides through the bore. It can, and should be lengthened a bit, and the front edge given a bit of a radius towards the barrel liner. The outside of the brass transfer port hole should be round and match the port size and location of the block. The hole dimension of the block is 7mm. It is important to make both ports match when it is assembled, and this is easily accomplished by completely removing the rear block so you can slide in the brass transfer port and look through the block's 7mm threaded hole to see your port job.
