FX FX Impact M4 Compact in .25 shooting Hybrids

Hello all,

I have a FX Impact M4 Compact in .25 with a heavy liner. I'm looking to shoot some Hybrids up to 100 yards. My goal is accuracy, not FPE. From your experience and without me having to use hundreds of Hybrids, what speed is best for the hybrids? It'll be a good target for me as right now I have it tuned for 945 fps. I'm only able to shoot 12 yards, but with the 12 yards, it should be hole on hole, but it's not. Group shot count is not consistent, but no group is hole on hole. My Krait Standard in .22 shooting slugs is hole on hole. See pictures below. Or is the Impact compact just not able to shoot Hybrids? If so I guess I'll be going back to pellets. Last 3 (Bottom right 3) were JSB Hades going at 951 fps, same tune as the Hybrids.

I usually try to get groups very tight at 12 yards before going to the range. Unfortunately, I don't have a place to shoot far.

I never found that speed or pressure for any of the 3 STX liners. Superior/heavy/slug i got those results at 12.5 By 25 it opened more. I had one particular lucky streak at 917fps 128bar where i pulled a few sub 1" groups at 60. I've gotten to the point with slugs, if they're not a single hole or 1.5 caliber width single hole at 12.5y I don't even bother with them past this. Other's say they've had great results. with .25, not once. My definition of "accurate" is different than someone else's. @JaceSpace1369's results with .25 hybrids in FX liners has been the same if i recall correctly.

I've never had any guns group well with Hybrids in either .22 or .25... I'll pick up some other slugs around the same weight and try them out.

I've heard of some guys being able to shoot them out of 1:24 twist barrels but that's never been my experience. The 1:16 twist shoots them well though. I can't remember what speed but my buddy had good luck I think with the same tune as it had with hades pellets before I tuned it to hunt coyotes so around 900fps.

Well... I'll buy more Hybrids and test them out since I'm buying other slugs. I'll have to work slow... start off at 900 fps, up the reg by 5 bar, adjust the HST and repeat... lol.

Ur right there Imho. Two numbers are reoccurring for me regardless of platform with slugs
A) 150bar
B) 930 fps

I just let the setup tell me what it wants to be, I don't chase numbers too much anymore other than group size. Hybrids seemed to be better for terminal performance on critters but not accuracy for me. Neither of my 25s like them. My 22s do tho.

Right. The goal is to shoot tree squirrels. I’m afraid with these groups, at 25, 50, and especially 70 yards, the groups will be too spread apart.

If you connect with any meat on a squirrel with a hybrid, it will bleed out and die in short order. The terminal effect of hybrids is relatively unmatched for carnage ime.

Have any of you tried sizing them down at all or just shooting the factory sizes? After shooting thousands of solid projectiles of different weights and lengths , I’ve found sizing makes a much bigger difference in accuracy than speed.
I'm pretty new to shooting slugs... what do you mean sizing? I just dump the slugs onto my hand and load them. Nothing special.

Sizing by means of pushing the slugs through a die. I use NOE sizing dies. The equipment to do the sizing is fairly inexpensive. A Lee hand press and a few dies will usually set you back a couple hundred dollars. The process is time consuming but once you get dialed in worth every penny. I’ve had poor performing hand cast slugs go from 3 plus inches at 50 yards down to less than 1/2 inch at the same yardage.

Your first step should be to slug your barrel and see what size it is. Lots of good info out there on that subject. I typically start at bore diameter then size down .0001 “and not much more than.0005” under size until I find the sweet spot. This works for pellets also.

Your question couldn’t have come at a better time. I had three days last week that I literally had nothing to do. Massive power outages. So I dedicated that time to revisiting my Impact compact .25 slugger. I pulled the LW barrel off and decided to retest everything FX liner wise that I had.

I focused on the Hybrid first. The slug 1:16 and Standard Superior would not shoot them. I tested from 130b to 150b. I tested at a ton of speeds and three different ways to arrive at each speed. When I got done with a Hybrid at a certain setting, I pulled a couple patches and tested some real slugs before moving to the next setting.

Everything sucked. Put the LW back on and returned to its settings and all was good with 30 grainers. Decided to do a little Hybrid testing with the LW, everything sucked. Better than FX liners but still a no go in my book.

Now we get into some irony. I can install that Superior Standard 500mm on my RTI Prophet 2 and it will shoot a Hybrid at 910fps. It’s not what I would consider outstanding, but way way better than how that barrel performs in my Impact. It shoots them good enough to go hunting with out to 100 yards. Crazy. And I wish you the best of luck.
