Anyone have experience with this ammo in this gun. Does it need a slug liner? Can magazine take the slug? thanks
I have tried a bunch of different cast bullets in a .30 STX 700mm barrel. From my observations the barrel require some very precise sizing of bullets. I think this is because of the method FX is using the rifle the barrels. The rifling is just very shallow, so allows little to no margin in sizing. diabolo pellets have such a oversized skirt which makes them very forgiving for the sizing...IMHO.
I suspect this is why there has been such a delay with FX having their slug barrels on the market. They are just to darn finicky on projectile sizing..
FX Slug X .22 barrels do really well with .22 NSA. I would advise using pellets in your smooth twist.30 FX, because the barrel won't accept the slugs, no matter how good you size them. the reason being the twist rate and lack of pressure seal at the end of the slug.
Getting slugs to shoot out of an airgun as accurately as diablo pellets...good luck...and when the magic combo for barrel twist + slugs sized perfectly + enough air to push them well ect...you're looking at a rare gem that is a PITA to produce perfect repeatable results with...trust me. You won't see a FX slug shooter out performing diablo's in the accuracy department... Its 2019 and slugs aren't new technology, in fact its older than diablo pellets...and diablo pellets were invented for a reason and have been our main choice for ammo as airgunners for a very good reason...
Some people don't seem to understand slugs are VERY spin stabilized, the most accurate rifles on this planet are shooting slugs @ 3,000-4,000 FPS...can we get subpar accuracy in comparison to those rifles with slugs @ Sub sonic velocities? Sure...but are you going to compete at their level, or even in 10m competition conditions against wadcutters? Likely not...Just my 2c
Once we develop air rifles that hit 2k+ fps with ease, then the concept of slug use as a projectile will make more sense...to ME at least.

For 30 years before I bought an airgun I shot .22 rimfire CBs. A 29 grain round nose at 720 fps. They shot very well and had about the same report as a kernel of corn popping. The same custom Marlin bolt action that I shot those in could put 5 CCI 40 grain hp in quarter size groups at 100 yards if the air was calm. I never chronographed them but it was probably 1250 fps from a 20 inch barrel. There's nothing magic about it. You can have excellent accuracy from slugs/bullets at any velocity. Whether they reach their speed with smokeless powder or compressed air shouldn't matter.
Shooting subsonic rounds is a joke in comparison to super sonic rounds that stay above transonic range...just do your own research I' not going to argue.
I would agree that diabolo pellets are more accurate at closer ranges. Pellets are always going to be the major role player in ammo for the foreseeable future. Slugs do outperform pellets at long ranges say past 100 yards. That does not mean any slug will outperform any pellet.
Slugs are more picky about what barrel they will shoot out of. Sizing is crucial to the performance of the slug. Slugs way out perform pellets in wind drift and drop because of the BC advantage they have. If you are shooting longer ranges, like past 100 yards, I think the slugs outperform pellets. Inside of 100 yards, especially in calm winds, pellets are pretty tough to beat.
I don't think either one you choose is better or worse, there are different situations where one is a better choice over the other. If you shoot 50 yards at squirrels, pellets will perform wonderful and those close ranges the wind will not move your pellet that much. If you shoot 100 yards or further, especially with wind, I personally prefer slugs over pellets but to each their own. If I am shooting 75 yard competition I would use a diabolo pellet for most guns.
Anyone know where I can find 40-60 grain .299 slugs? Or a sizer for any slug that's very close to .299"?
