FX Hybrid Hunting Journal

A bit late to the game as I have been really busy lately and the weather has really sucked, raining many of the days I have been off work. I knew my Cricket grouped really well with the Hybrids, but I had not zeroed the gun nor attempted to hunt with it.....until now. The gun is now zeroed for the Hybrids with corresponding power level. Will list speeds etc down the line. I also changed scopes and mounted an Aztec 5-25.

This morning I took my first squirrel with the setup. Took the shot braced against patio door frame aiming for a head shot. I heard the hit, squirrel jumped up and ran about 3-4 yards and under my workshop/lg shed. I let it be for a little while just in case and went to check it out. Found it DRT under the stairs. Shot placement was about an inch below my POA, will test out accuracy soon again and see why that was. Distance was about 30 yards.

Dissected it to see damage, expansion, etc. First things first, no pass through. Entrance wound was pretty nasty, not a huge hole, but not a tiny pin hole like my pellets tend to make. Opening the chest cavity I found basically lung batter, pierced heart, pierced liver, huge pool of blood. Found the spent ammo lower in the abdomen, see pics for understanding the kind of damage I just described.

Another customer served, 32 yards this time. I took a shot to the vitals & saw it leap in air only to sit in place about a yard nearer. Only then I realized that I had missed the shot. I saw it “hit” low, too low apparently.

But, it just sat there, so.... I indexed another one and took a head shot. It was a solid hit this time, probably a bit high, but grounded it permanently.

Ammo looks like a pass through, could not recover. Brutal damage to the top of the head/brain:

What power level? That doesn't look like much expansion at all and the heart has a neat small hole through it. I would expect an exploded heart and mushrooming of the slug.

In comparison, here is an NSA .22 slug at about 800 fps.

@DanielL

My gun can only shoot them at 600 fps, good for 17.5ish FPE. Frankly I think that’s very respectable expansion, but definitely not as good as your results. The other issue is that my gun can’t shoot the NSAs to save it’s life. At least not the ones I have tried. But the Hybrids give me the option to use slugs and very accurately.

Ah, 600 fps. That makes sense. Have you had any luck with Predator Polymags? They open up very well at slower speeds.
