FX Crown 22 - Prepped to shoot slugs!

Okay, none of this means anything if it's not accurate. I won't be able to shoot until tomorrow at the earliest. But the gun is ready for some targets.

NOTE: measured twist rate at 1:16

Here are some chrono charts. This first one is with 23gr NSA slugs and 150bar....600mm slug liner.

This second one is with 23gr NSA slugs at 155bar. Only 10 shots as I don't have a whole bunch of slugs.

This last one is with 19gr NSA slugs and 142bar.

I lost the 21gr NSA chart, but the performance was very good.

Thanks for taking the time to do this Bob. My only worry with slugs after watching the S A guys is the ricochet sound the slugs make. I don't think the horses and people are going to like that very much. I will get that sound sometimes on a missed shot on ground squirrels with pellets. I would like to know what the holdover at 100yards is compared to pellets?

I tried the .22 pellet liner B today with the redesigned Monsters 25g, max velocity I could get was 860-70 which I was dissapointed with, I thought the pellet was still too tight in the barrel. 18.13's were making 980 and were much looser seating in.

Hopefully I will get to try my slug liner shortly, BTW Bob I ran into the exact same problem as you with the swap from the .25 sleeve, also my liner itself had to be polished slighty to fit in the breech end of the assembly.

Havoc,

You have a 500mm slug liner?

I could only get the 600mm. I think the 500mm will do fine if you can get them going fast enough through it.

The 19 and 21gr slugs are pretty short though, which "could" make it so they're not as accurate as the heavier slugs. I think this may be why Matt and the Air Hunters don't have any videos shooting those weights....none that I remember seeing anyway.

I will be thrilled if the 19 and 21gr shoot well, as I have about 600 of those. I ordered those early on when the 500mm slug liners were first announced. I don't know if FX is still going to be making them.

I'll do some testing of them today.

I'll do more target shooting tomorrow and check groups for both 21 and 23gr. I have both weights in .217 and .218. it was just too darned cold to do that this morning.

Yeah, the 600mm barrel is needed to get the 23gr slugs going 910fps, which is just outside the low end of the optimum range of 920 to 940fps. I squeezed 925fps out of the Crown, which at 155bar is sort of pushing it.

So 19 or 21g will be the heaviest I could shoot with my Wildcat. I may as well order a Huma reg for it too. Thanks for testing Bob.

Edit: Did you notice any ricochet sounds?

I chrono'd 21gr pellets in the Crown with the 500mm barrel before I ordered the 600mm barrel. It could only get them to 910fps avg. So 23gr would have been under 900 for sure.

Yes there were distinct ricochet sounds on 5 of the 7 birds I shot. I was surprised.....it happened on pigeons and starlings. Weird.

Watch the last Air Hunters last video and just about every sparrow or starling they hit would make that sound. I guess 19g/.218 will be the max for the Wildcat then. I'm still worried about the ricochet sound at the ranch. I know you need more time but I really want to know how much flatter they shoot than pellets at 100yards. Keep up the great work.
