FX Crown .177 at 20 and 50 meters

Hi all. 

Did som testing with 6 different pellets at 20 and 50 meters. The fps is not optimal for the heavier pellets. But i did not bother to take of the stock and make adjustment at this time. I used the same setting for each pellet on 20 and 50 meters. Center of the targets at 20 meters is 11mm diameter. 

Reg. setting: 110 bar. HST: 19,5 mm. 10 shots in each target. 

Target nr. 1: FX dome pellet 4,52mm. 8,44gr. 900fps. Poweradjuster (PW)at 3.

Target nr. 2. JSB Match Exact premium 4,52mm, 8,44g. 900fps. PW: 3

Target nr. 3. H&N Baracuda Match 4,52mm. 10,65gr. 860 fps. PW:Max

Target nr. 4. JSB Exact Heavy 4,52 mm. 10,34gr. 880 fps. PW:Max

Target nr. 5. JSB Exact Monster 4,52 mm. 13,43gr. 810 fps. PW: Max.

Target nr. 6. JSB Exact Beast 4,52mm. 16,20 gr. 745 fps. PW: Max

( This is the best this gun have ever shot. Also with these pellets. I have tried them earlier at higher fps but did not get any grouping. So to my surprise, at 745 fps they almost group as well as my AA S510). 

As you will see there is no target picture of these pellets at 50 meters. At this speed they hit all over the place 

 

Same pellets (not the JSB Beast) at 50 meters with same settings on the gun. Center of target at 50 meters is 12mm.

Well, in my opinion it is not that good. This gun should group better at these distances. But I guess it can do better after some more tweaking and adjustments. This test was just to show how my gun is shooting with those pellets. Will continue testing

My .177 Crown has the regulator creep so it shoots the first shot low after sitting but then on it clusters pellets into nice tight groups. 8.44 Air Arms @ 830-840fps and 10.4gr around the same velocity. The 10.4gr shoots accurate at higher velocites but I don't like running the .177 hot, thats why I have a .25

Can you try the 8g and 10g pellets at 780fps for me? Otherwise the 16gr seem to be moving at the right speed for the weight.

Sinlgle loading VS mag cuts my groups in half!

The sweet spot for any of it seems to be 880 or below, 780 with the 8.44g is 12FT and they will shoot amazingly at this velocity. Monsters and Beasts shoot amazingly well around the 780 mark!

You will not be winning any competitions with that setup as it is. at 20ms it should be 5mm pellet on pellet. If you cant get any jsb pellet shooting better, I would swap the barrel for larger caliber. the X barrel should not be pellet fussy at all. .177 should be awesome for target practice. 

I don’t see how can you fix that by trying different pellets, you have tried already!

@spray1mark, which barrel are you talking about with the recommended pellet speeds? The reason I ask is that with my Brocock Bantam with LW barrel (non-poly), I get excellent accuracy (penny sized groups at 52 yards) with both the JSB Heavy 10.3 and the H&N 10.65 at 910 to 920 FPS. Also, with my RAW TM1000 (LW barrel non-poly) and JSB Heavy 10.3 at 890 to 900 FPS, I get less than dime sized groups at 52 yards.

you need to tune that thing. my crosman 1720T is making much better groups at 60 yards.

Hi Arvid,

Just went through the same process your doing. The sum of all the testing was JSB's 8.4 1/2 inch at fifty yds at about 760 fps. The absolute best accuracy was the 13 gr JSB's at max, with many groups less than 1/2 inch. Each of the test groups were 16 shots. At 72 yds no contest 13 grs still shooting half inch or less with 16 shots. I tried loading single shot and I may have been a bit better but not much and it certainly not enough not using the magazine. Especially for recreational shooting.

There is nothing wrong with your Crown, its about finding the correct velocity for the pellet weight that you are shooting. We shot a target this am with 86 shots at fifty yrds. with out a dropped shot. If you really want to work with the FX Crown you can find the correct combination with any pellet weight. These are amazing rifles.

No argument that the Crown shoots the heavier .177 pellets well, but I only want to use 8.44's simply to get a longer point blank impact zone.

Going up in pellet weight only serves to get more impact energy, a .22 at 960 is not really any flatter then a 12FT .177 with an 8.44 and .177 pellets are way more consistent.

Not really interested in more than 45 yards and less than 25.
