FX Chrony - are there firmware updates for these things?

. . . subject asks it. I have one and honestly, I'm not a particular fan of it - I much prefer my "old school" competition electronics "Prochrono Digital". I just googled it as I couldn't remember what it is called - it is apparently now truly old and "obsolete" as they don't make it anymore.

But anyway . . . . I've gotten a friend / co-worker of mine @work into airgunning and he's just purchased his very first gun ( one of the .25 cal avengers ). He currently has my prochrono as I let him borrow it to learn on / tune his new toy. This older chrono, with the add-on lighting kit, *never* misses a shot - *NEVER*. It just simply works.

This FX thing that I also have - had to use it today re: above - co-worker has my other one - this damned thing misses 2 or 3 out of every 10 shots resulting in incomplete strings, it strikes me as a battery hog - it's just "finicky". I know there are TON'S of you in here who swear by 'em. Do we collectively know . . .

. . . maybe they run better in iDevices vs. Android? I have an android cell phone that I run it off of. ( Galaxy S8 I think it is )

Maybe I'm not doing something right? I mount it to the barrel about an inch or so behind the muzzle. OK - technically it's mounted to the *suppressor* - a DonnyFL Sumo. Should I be further fwd or back? Should I try an iToy of some sort? I'm I.T. at work and we manage users cell phones - at any given moment in time I have orphaned iPhones in one of my office drawers - I could fire one of those up and try that I suppose... should I purchase an inexpensive android tablet? (I prefer Android over iUniverse)

I really dig the fact that it's so small and portable BUT . . . it annoys the hell out of me when I use it. I'd much rather use my older "big and clunky" one. ( yes - I was experimenting with / tuning a gun today and . . . got irritated with that thing - again. lol )

I quick googled very briefly before popping into here re: firmware for the actual hardware - nothing popped up. Just a bunch of hits re: the app available for download from Google Play and iTunes. It's entirely possible I haven't looked hard enough ... but I figure if anyone will know it'll be you guys. ;-)

Use default settings on app. Make sure you set the correct speed range. If you "think" you shoot at 600 fps make sure you chose the 400-800 fps range and not the 580-800 range (I just picked these number for the example). Otherwise, you may think you are shooting at 600+fps but some shots may actually fall below 580 fps, thus will not register. And the same thing goes on the high end of the range also (800fps in my example). The FX Chrono software cuts off readings outside your selected velocity range.

Others: should mount it making sure that no obstruction is in front of the antenna (most of the entire flat front area). Make sure that the pellet's path and the antenna's direction intercept each other not less than about 12 inches and not more than 3 feet from the muzzle. Should have no obstacles within 6-10 feet in front and less than 45 degrees left and right, except the target. If the target is within around 10 feet and it is metal, may want to dial back sensitivity.

The upgrades to the software are only through the app as far as I’m aware. They had several updates early in the year that I remember.

The only times I’ve had issues with it reading are when I didn’t have it close enough to the muzzle. I found it didn’t like to be too far back. It seems to like being as far forward as I can get it.

I noticed the speed things others mentioned when I was running it with my Leshiy and I just thought it didn’t read the slower speeds. Then I found the speed setting, which allowed it to read the really slow stuff.

Mine worked when I first got it, rubber banded to the barrel shroud behind the moderator, then no readings what so ever after that. I recently got one of those table top flexible ball hinged tripods from Amazon thanks to another member, and all is great now. It works best if within 3” of below the barrel, and just behind the moderator where it directly attaches to the shroud.

hopefully your chronograph came with that small padded plate with the 1/4-20 hole in it. You have to take the four screws off of the back of the chronograph, separate the chronograph halves, remove the barrel clamp spacer plate and slip the holed plate in its place, padded side outwards. Reassemble the chronograph and your in business.

the plate on top of the tripod with the 1/4-20 bolt snaps off of the tripod, and attaches to that chronograph plate, making attachment to the tripod a breeze

I got an update notification on my tablet but not on my phone so I just reinstalled the app on the phone.

No real issues with not reading the shot, might miss one every 1000 and that is probably because I have left something on the bench too close to the unit.

I made a bracket to mount the fx chrony to my Impact so I can shoot groups without out it hanging on the barrel - works great!

Really enjoying mine - find it to be very convenient, always found setting up an optical chrony and aligning it for each target to be a pain in the butt.
