FX BOSS cocking/hammer/trigger problem

Hello,

A friend of mine, beginner in pcp, came with his fx Boss this afternoon. He said the cocking lever was kind of loose as if the rifle was cocked, and pulling the trigger wouldn't do anything.
I removed scope, stock, shroud, bottle, barrel and found out there were no less than 4 pellets stuck in the barrel!
I'm not a specialist and I don't really know how the Boss actually works when you pull the trigger. I tried to figure it out myself and I removed the trigger to try to understand the mechanism. But once removed, there is nothing that moves in there! By the way, I also removed the trigger wheel to access the sear and everything seems stuck.

I also removed the spring and hammer weight to see the hammer. And it doesn't move at all.

Is there anyone who could tell me what I can do to solve his problem?

What is supposed to happen when you pull the trigger. What are the moving parts supposed to release the hammer? How do they work, move... ?

There are videos about almost anything but I couldn't find one to help me with that problem...

Thanks

These guns can be double loaded I've done it myself. Well like any gun of this type I believe as you pull the cocking lever back it brings the hammer back and it's locked into place by the sear, as you pull the trigger the sear is tripped and hammer released. You can't remove the hammer with the sear/trigger assembly in place. First push the 3 pins for the trigger out, the whole assembly should come out.

Then once all the trigger parts are out the hammer will come right out. Just make sure you keep an eye out for the sear (held in place by one of the pins) and make sure the spring is attached to the trigger block. It's explained well and shown here. I don't own a Boss and have never worked on one, but it should be identical to the Royale.

Edit - After reading it sounds like you have the trigger out and maybe the sear is binding somehow.

Sometimes when cocking a FX Boss with a bit too much enthusiasm, the rear end of the hammer weight might get caught in the hexagonal hole of the hammer spring adjuster nut.
The result is that the hammer spring stays compressed and cannot release anymore.
Next time, just remove the stock, and press back the hammer through the hole in the hs adjuster nut while the gun is on safe. Saves a lot of hassle ;)
The trigger from a Boss is very complicated compared to a Royale trigger, and it is pretty much on expert level how to adjust one properly. You have to know exactly what you are doing :)

Thanks for the info! I'll give it a try if it happens again.

Though this time, I guess it was a little more complicated: The hammer was no longer properly aligned with the cocking lever. My guess is that the "shooter" inserted a first pellet without pulling the lever till the end. Since it was not cocked, he couldn't shoot and tried a second, third and finally 4th time, inserting a pellet each time!!! The gun was then cocked and he probably pulled the trigger. The air couldn't push the pellets out and must have tried to escape somewhere, probably making some damage. I don't know if this makes sense at all but this is all I can imagine...

That was my first trigger! I finally took everything apart and, to my surprise, could event put everything back together... It works but I had almost lost the first stage and the second was way too light, the slightest touch would let it go... I turned the font screw and it seemed to lengthen the first stage a bit and then the screw just before the trigger seemed to make the second stage a little harder, just what I needed. That must have been beginner's luck! I was afraid messing up with the trigger and finally not being able to even get a decent result.

I still have a little question: After removing the bottle, I was afraid that there might still be some air remaining in the chamber... I would have shot it once to be sure but since everything was stuck I couldn't do it... The only idea that I had was to push on the valve to see if some air was escaping but I'm not sure this is a way of making sure there is no air left...

Hey Nathaniel,

This quote sums it all up imo:

"He said the cocking lever was kind of loose as if the rifle was cocked, and pulling the trigger wouldn’t do anything."

I almost know for sure that the hammer weight got caught by the adjuster nut, I've encountered this specific Boss issue a few times in the past :)
Because the hammer weight is conically shaped at the back, it can be forced into the hex hole of the adjuster nut, and sometimes, it stays there...
Cycling the lever after that, will indeed feed more pellets into the barrel.
However, I would think that a boss has little trouble to blast 4 pellets out of the barrel, but I could be wrong here because I have never tried ;)

Good job that you got things covered, I can only encourage the fact that you decided to give it a go by yourself :)

cheers, Gijs
