FX Airguns was proud to be a sponsor at the annual Pyramyd Air Cup 2019. This year the cup was held at a new location; the Cardinal Shooting Range in Marengo, Ohio, which allowed for the addition of a 100 yard benchrest event to the PA Cup. For both the 90 registered shooters as well as the audience, the benchrest event was clearly the highlight this year.
A large diverse array of rifles was on display on the benches, including rifles from Air Arms, Air Force, American Air Arms, Benjamin, Brocock, Daystate, FX, RAW, and Umarex as well as many custom made rifles. Well known benchrest shooters were all around, including many familiar YouTube personalities as well as a few past benchrest champions like Alvaro Lopez, Shane Kellar & Claudio Flores.
Three groups of around 30 shooters each shot two qualifying cards on Friday Aug. 23rd. Wind was a definite factor with directional changes happening quite often. More than a few wind gusts dashed hopes for many of the shooters. Interestingly, compared to other events, the wind seemed to affect everyone equally as it didn’t seem that any lane had an advantage over another (since there were no berms on the sides of the range). The top nine shooters from each group advanced with some impressive scores.
FX Airguns really separated itself from the pack with 20 (of the total 27) 100 yard benchrest finalists shooting FX! The majority of those rifles being the powerful FX Impact MKII’s in .30 caliber with the 700mm barrel. The finals were to take place at 3:00pm on Saturday Aug 24th, but the mornings field target match went long, and the finals were delayed until 5:00pm.
Wind became more of a factor at the finals then in the previous days qualifying rounds. Shooters seemed to take two approaches; either waiting on a pocket of predictable wind to take a run, or taking a large amount of sighters and fighting for their scores.
The Pyramyd Air Cup awards prized totaling $21,500. Seven of the top ten winners were shooting FX Airguns. Winning it all with an impressive score of 221 was Justin Welch. Many know Justin as he has consistently been in the hunt for the last couple of competitions. He definitely put it all together for the PA Cup (including some in round adjustments to his FX Impact MKII!). A big congratulations to Justin and all the other winners of the first 100-yard Benchrest event held at the Pyramyd Air Cup.
Congratulations to everyone who won, advanced to the finals, and participated. It was a great group of shooters and a well-run event by everyone at Pyramyd Air. We hope to see everyone again next year in what we believe will grow to be a marquee event for 100-yard Benchrest for years to come.
