FX Air Rifle owners....what is the best way to clean the regulator.

Just want to add that brake cleaner might a little harsh on the rubber orings, use automotive MAF or electronic cleaner is a lot safer and still get the dirt out. You don’t need to slide all the washers out if you don’t want to. Another way/better to do it is borrow your wife’s ultrasonic jewelry cleaner if you want ultra clean. I’m not sure about adding oil or lube to the washers. I think they are supposed to be dry.

You shouldn't have to use any kind of spray or chemicals to clean the components of a reg. Unless you found it lying under a bridge, possibly in a creek. Everything should just wipe off.

I’m replacing the regulator because the gun has massive....and I mean MASSIVE reg creep. As in it’ll go all the way to 250 bar on the reg pressure lol. I didn’t even need to chrony it to realize that it needs a regulator and reg piston replacement. Also I got word from Mr. Ernest Rowe that it required a replacement.

I don’t get how a “how to” question that the OP had originally, ends up in comments as “you shouldn’t need a new reg”...or “get this one instead”, all the way to telling him basically his reg doesn’t amount to anything over a Huma.

OP never once said “hey, I’m thinking of doing this, what do you all think?” He asked for suggestions on how to clean a regulator.

Thats just as bad as inquiring about where to get O rings and the reply back would be “why?”, or “what are you doing?” instead of just pointing me to popular on line vendors of o rings.

the reason for spray at least in my opinion and experience is the spray will dissolve any grease/oil along with the direct it traps and wash it away, it then evaporates quickly to leave the surface as clean as possible. Wiping generally is just moving dirt around and with any kind of oil leave a lot behind even if we can’t see it. The regulator parts are pretty small so as clean as possible would be desired. 


same idea as washing vs wiping your hands, one would be wiping for ages trying to get grease off completely.

I rebuild or inspect 10 regs a year and never had to spray any part of them down. The only grease/oil in them is silicone. We are not rebuilding a ball joint or driveshaft here. There should never be dirt in any reg. Its not a big involved project that some make it out to be. But it should be done in a sanitary environment. A reg is not an intricate device, they are actually quite crude. The outer edges of the washers should be inspected for wear. If they have seated nicely with the washer next to them and don't have burrs or sharp edges, your regs recovery time will be much quicker. You can polish the washers and the spool to aid in recovery time and consistency. The seat in the reg is what can cause creep and should be inspected under a magnifying glass for imperfections.

Wildly inconsistent. It’ll take like 5-10 shots to get it somewhat consistent. Around 50 FPS spread. Dude, it’s broken lol. If it’s going to 250 bar on the REGULATOR GAUGE, it’s gosh darn broken.
