FX 500 older models VS newer

I'm thinking about buying a used FX 500. I've seen some of the older models for sale that don't have the power adjuster or regulator that seem to have a decent price. What am I missing out on by maybe getting one without the power wheel. Are the newer models capable of higher velocity? I'm sure even if I had one with an adjuster I'd shoot it on high anyway, unless it shot over 940 somewhere in that range.

Unless you have a real need to shoot at lower power I doubt you would miss that feature. Most guns don't have adjustable power. At least not easily adjustable. Plus changing the velocity changes your poi so if you have your hold overs dialed in then you have to compensate for that. I like being able to just pick up my gun and know it is going to hit where I aim every time with having to worry about what power setting I had it on last time I used it. Just something to think about. Plus you can probably get a better deal on a previous generation. As long as it has the most important features you want. Personally I would want a regulator, but that can be added after the fact if you find a great deal on a non regulated gun.

I just bought a Royale 400 and one of my favorite features is the power adjuster. On low power there is no telling how many shots I can get. I do some pesting at the stable where we keep our horses and shooting a 900fps pellet is a safety concern for the horses; not saying that you can disregard the direction you shoot on low power, but it's not as big of an issue. If you're just wanting to shoot some chalk in the backyard or zap a squirrel at 30yards or less low power is awesome. Just my opinion

My friend Scott has one of each and they are both bullet-proof. When I fly out to shoot with him, he gives me the 500 without the power wheel. I lovingly call it the cheap gun. I have often said if I could only have one air rifle it would be the FX 500. We often shoot inside sheds and the power setting is great for that. We can turn to power 1 & crank up 4 minutes & be zeroed at 20yds. Won't shoot any holes through the roof. Buy the 500, you won't regret it.
