FX 18.1 BC test

I did some lunchtime shooting today with my first tins of FX branded 18.1 grain pellets. My velocity on the near distance was 883 fps (average of 5 shots) and measured velocity 49 yards down range was 723 fps (average of 5 shots).

Chairgun pro gives me a BC of 0.0331 (GA).

It was about 53f and I'm at 1300 feet elevation. These were shot from my Cricket II.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing. This is the kind of measured emperical data that I come to AGN to see. There's lots of cliches, tropes, and he-said, she-said regarding the physics of our hobby and it's really refreshing to come across something like your information.

I did a similar experiment with the JSB 18.1s. I was curious if the "common knowledge" that diabolos do better in the wind if not pushed too fast was actually true. This is what I came up with: (5 shot averages a muzzle and then at 48 yards).

BC of 18.13s @ 35.62fpe at the muzzle (940.5fps)= 0.0340
BC of 18.13s @ 30.5fpe at the muzzle (870.3fps) = 0.0358

So, at my elevation, the starting fps of 870 did have a bit better BC. I'd be curious to see if that holds true at 1300 feet too.

Again, thank you. Your post was a breath of fresh air.

@centercut, polygonal barrel in my USFT agrees with your feeling. PHENOMENAL in the wind. I never posted the results anywhere as I did it before I posted on airgun forums, but I shot my 0.177 Brocock (standard LW rifling) against my USFT (polygonal LW rifling) on a bunch of different windy days, 10 shot groups around 53 yards (back fence at previous property). No hold-offs or timing for wind gusts, just held on same aim point.. Both guns in the high teens for FPE and both using the JSB 10.34gr. The center of the polygonal groups were always closer to aim point than the center of the groups from the standard rifling.

Edit: had another thought/data point. Bobby and Sandy are at or near the top of the heap in our monthly Extreme FTs. I believe that both of them are shooting Red Wolf HPs with polygonal barrels. Those barrels have also had Bobby's extremely skilled machining and optimizing (on that note, if somebody was to run some #s on how often a barrel touched by Bobby has been in the top 3 at EFT, it would be an eye opener). Now, they both are great shooters, dedicated enough to put in the practice time, and really know their guns, all of which are much bigger factors than having a poly barrel instead of a conventionally rifled barrel, BUT, those poly barrels are another piece of the whole package that has proven to be successful for them.

Ok, I cranked the hammer spring one turn giving me a near velocity of 925 fps and a far velocity of 750 fps = 0.0323 BC (GA).

Sorry, i did edit this to correct for warmer temperatures, it had warmed up to 60f.

And my last 5-shot test group... @ 50 yards.

And I try to keep it real and not only show the best groups. Here's the full target. The red and yellow stickers were my first 1/2 mag groups (7 shots each) and the winds were not great. I was also making some scope adjustments. The purple target was getting more calm (I did make one more scope adjustment which was that far right shot. And then I held over the yellow sticker for my last group when it was DEAD calm.

I don't know what it has been with this sightmark scope. I really, REALLY tend to over adjust on my clicks...
