Are they accurate?, any issues?, would you install one in a 1st gen crown .25 or would finding a royal 400 Be A better option? This is information for a friend who will be using it out to 50yds and wants 1/2in or better accuracy!
Very accurate with the right ammo. I changed my barrel liner and probe out from .25 to .177 on my Impact turned my power wheel from 5 down to 1 and shot a couple half inch groups at 50 yards. Then I got serious and immediately after shot a 1/4inch group. So accurate I would have to say yes. Think I was shooting the heavier 10.3 JSB pellet in the low 900s.
My stx liner was accurate but god knows how? After a couple of hundred pellets I decided to remove the mod and see what was inside, nothing other than pellet shavings. Rodding a pellet through and the reason became obvious, the internal finish was the worse I have ever seen, After spending a few hours I did manage to get it smooth, I don’t think it made much difference to accuracy but consistency was better and it gave me more confidence.
I think you will find a big difference in the ones made on the new machines, the interior finish is much better, make sure to source one with the packing tube that says superior on it.
Yes you are correct on having to buy the barrel kit, and assuming reg. Will need adjusting as well, one of the reasons he may want to find a nice used royal 400? He says the new 400’s no longer available?
Or a used FX Streamline in .177. I have one of those older .177 FX ST solid barrels in my FT rig (Crown) and its a laser. 1/2" groups at 50 yards all day long... Should be able to pick up a used FX Streamline for under $600 and just clean, reseal, polish, and adjust for .177 RD Monster 13.43 at 820 FPS.
Well, mine (Wildcat) is currently shooting only the Monsters really really well. Perhaps one of the H/Ns as well. But can’t get the 10.34s or 8.44s to shoot to save my life. Still playing with it and hoping that it can shoot those, as I like them. But with the Monsters it’s a lazer so far. More to come.
Thanks for the information so far, he is a very good friend and loves his crown, and at one time owned a Royal.22, which he sold to buy his crown and has regretted it! I told him that according to some dealer’s Websites list It as a special order?
