FX Funny thing with this Chrono

This is my Chinese-made cheap chrono. It was working pretty well with my 300mm barrel, until I upgraded it to 500mm. I'm using an FX Dreamtact. I've tried indexing the liner, and now it can read slugs (11 grain). Pellets (10.34gr) have to be tuned down pretty low, below 650fps for it to read. As for slugs, it has no problem reading any velocity. This is a bit perplexing for me. Can anybody help me out?

You've just found the weak spot of optical chronographs. I might recommend trying to tape off as much as you can to prevent light pollution from messing with the sensors. It will break the "beams" more effectively if it's a dark box.
That's a very good point @6gun
Mine triggers whenever I go from shade to full sunlight.
For example, poking the gun from indoor shade out the window into full sunlight
Taping off the sides worked for me

just my 2 rays of sunshine

I have one like that and it has never failed to read a projectile, mostly pellets but some slugs, as long as it was charged. I mostly use it indoors, however. Outdoors I use a different inexpensive one that is made for tripod mounting. It sometimes misses a shot if the barrel is not well centered - and when it needs charged. I've never put sun shades on it. But I shoot from a covered porch so it is not in direct sunlight.
