Free Spinner Target (DIY)

We’ve been talking over in the FT forum about homemade targets. With some people snowed in, I figured if you have time, a welder and some scrap you could use this thread and run with it. Here is what I made and how I made it

Here are are the scraps of pipe and 3/8” steel I had laying around. Got them for free from a metal shop down the road. 

Cut them up with a sawzall for mock-up. 

then got out the tig welder and went to work - although a mig or stick would have been faster 

I coped (ground with a bench grinder a semicircle into the metal to make it fit the pipe) the center target backer so it would be flush

Had to check alignment. Built up welds on either side of the pipe like a ramp to keep the targets in place while spinning. 

Made one one leg longer to make it easier to press into the ground. Ready for paint.

Nice write, you have the same ting welder and table that I have, I love my everlast, you got me wanting to build one, but your right, setup on rig is more time consuming. Nice job buddy!

LOL. Maybe do red on the outside, and white in the middle....your Gamo probably likes white!

Dirtbikerick- thanks! Always wondered how many people bought that thing. such a good welding setup for the money - especially when you don’t use it that often!

crossman2016- Hah! Never thought of that! Highly probable. At this rate I’m buying time until I purchase my first pcp rig. Been lurking this forum for months. Thought it was time to contribute.

Great job on the spinners. I'm going to have to build me 1 or 2 of them.
​Your a lot tougher than me though, I'd have to at least wear flip flops no bare feet for me when welding.

Lol- I would like to say I was smart enough to wear closed toed shoes, but I was in shorts and sandals. Tig thankfully is splatter free. Your fingers however can still get singed - which mine did. Never fails. I always seem to forget that the metal is still hot... too impatient.

I know that Model of Welder / PC VERY well. Learned to Tig with that one then moved up to the PowerTig 250EX so I could do aluminum too. These days the little guy is only used for Plasma Cutting.

I used 3/8” mild steel and a mild steel rod. I’ve never cut steel that thick before - turns out a new sawzall blade works well. Not exactly like a hot knife through butter, more like cheese!

Version 2.0. Decided to cut it apart and make it into a quadrant target. Put it back together tonight. If you make one - do it this way. Works much better and you can tell where you hit easier. I didn’t like only having the two sides - made it hard to know if I was high or low. This way it’s instant feedback.

I am gonna make one today,my plan is to use one of those steel hoods used to stop squrels from climbing up. Gonna put a 2nd 6 in it ,staple target,and bolt to tree in back yard.should work.. Steve
